Warriors earn split with extra-inning heroics

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Junior Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) knocked in the go ahead run in the top of the eighth with an opposite field hit and freshman Mikayla Aldenderfer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) threw two scoreless innings in relief to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a 5-3 eight-inning victory over King's (Pa.) College in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon, April 25. Lycoming fell in the second game, 8-0.

The Warriors (19-15 overall) struck for two runs in the top of the eighth to head into the bottom of the inning with a 5-3 lead. Kline lifted an outside fastball down the right-field line that landed past a diving outfielder for a double that plated junior Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain), who was placed on second to start the extra frame. Freshman Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) followed suit by ripping a single into right field to plate Kline and extend the lead.

Aldenderfer (11-7) retired the side, stranding the runner placed on second, to secure the victory. The freshman threw two scoreless innings in relief, allowing no hits.

Senior Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) allowed three runs on 11 hits, striking out one in six  innings of work.

Kline (2-for-4, 3B, two runs and RBI) and junior Darci Warriner (2-for-3, run scored, RBI) led eight Warriors to find the hit column. Freshman Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) drove in two runs with a double and sophomore Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian), Nace, Klosko and seniors Cayla Treaster (Williamsport,Pa./Montoursville Area) and Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) also added base hits.

Kris Kocher allowed four earned runs on 10 hits and struck out four in a complete game for King's.

The Monarchs (17-18 overall) offense was led by Mackenzie Yori, who finished 4-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.

Kline tripled to left center and was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Warriner to tie the game at one in the second. The Monarchs struck for two runs in the bottom of the second to regain the lead, but the Warriors brought six hitters to the plate in the top of the fourth to knot the game at three. Gessner led off with an infield single and advanced to second following a two-out bunt single by Warriner. Reitz cashed in with a two-RBI double to right field to plate Gessner and Warriner.

A diving play by Gessner ended the seventh and sent the game into extra innings with the winning run stranded on base.

In game two, the Monarchs used eight hits to plate six runs in the bottom of the second to jump out to a 6-0 lead before scoring two in the fifth to earn the win.

Brown, Kline and freshman Isabella Gackenbach (Easton, Pa./Easton) notched singles and Warriner reached on a walk.
