Warriors sweep rival River Hawks

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Junior Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) recorded three hits, including a three-run homer, and senior Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) earned a pair of victories in the circle to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a sweep of Susquehanna University, winning 4-0 and 7-5, to retain the Cancer Awareness Cup on Tuesday, April 16 at Sassafras Field.

In game one, Kline broke open a scoreless tie with a three-run bomb over the left field bullpen, scoring junior Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) and sophomore Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) in the third inning.

Lycoming (18-12 overall) tacked on an insurance run in the top of the sixth to lead 4-0. Kline led off with a single and moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area). Freshman Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) plated Kline by sending a line single into center field.

Nace (8-6) stranded a runner in the sixth and retired the final five hitters to cap off the complete-game victory.

Kline finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored. Brown went 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Klosko (RBI) and Warriner (double) each added a hit.

In game two, the Warriors trailed by three heading into the top of the fifth inning, but scored four runs, all with two outs, to regain a 5-4 lead.

Singles from Nace, Kline, and Klosko set up bases loaded with two outs. Junior Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) scored two with a single up the middle and freshman Morgan Christine (Reigelsville, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) followed with another hit up the middle to reload the bases. Freshman Isabella Gackenbach (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) capped the rally with a two-RBI double to left center to give the Warriors the lead.

Susquehanna (13-12 overall) knotted the game back at five in the bottom half of the fifth, but the Warriors responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to go back on top, 7-5.

Nace stranded runners in the sixth and the seventh to complete the victory. The senior earned the win by closing out the final four innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out one. Senior Cayla Treaster (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) threw the first three innings, allowing three earned runs on four hits. She struck out one.

Every Warrior registered a hit in the contest, led by Gackenbach, who finished 3-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Warriner and Klosko each drove in two runs, going 2-for-4, and Nace also added two singles. Kline went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and Brown had a hit, the 99th of her career, which drove in a run. Senior Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore), Gessner and Christine added singles to round out the Warrior hit column.

The Warriors got on the board first when Gackenbach, Duda and Brown singled consecutively with two outs to scratch across the game's first run.

The River Hawks took their first lead after scoring three runs on two hits in the bottom half of the frame.  Susquehanna tacked on a run to extend their lead to 4-1 in the top of the third.
