WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – In a game that featured nine ties, senior
Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored her sixth goal to help the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team tie the game for the ninth time with 3:33 left, but DeSales University scored with less than a minute remaining to earn a 16-15 non-conference victory on Tuesday, March 5, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Trailing 15-12 with just under 11 minutes remaining, the Warriors (0-3 overall) stormed back behind two goals from McGinniss and another from junior
Hailey Kimble (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post). McGinniss capitalized on a free-position shot to knot the game at 15 with 3:33 to go.
Both defenses stood their ground until DeSales' Ellis McCall found a crease, driving to the middle of the box and connecting on the game-winning goal with 45 seconds remaining. The Bulldogs (1-3 overall) controlled the ensuing draw and ran out the remaining time.
McGinnis notched her third straight game with six goals, while also adding 15 draw controls and three ground balls. Kimble notched her third straight multi-goal game, finishing with
two goals, three ground balls and an assist. Senior
Thamina Peti (York, Pa./West York Area) tallied three goals and senior
Kim Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) finished with two goals and a team-best five ground balls. Junior
Alexis Tchou (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) and freshman
Emma Lehr (Danville, Pa./Danville) each added a goal. Freshman
Erika Boyer (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) finished with three assists.
The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first four minutes thanks to goals from Peti and Kimble. DeSales outscored the Warriors 5-1 over the next 10 minutes, earning one of the few two-goal leads of the contest, 5-3. McGinniss scored her second free-position goal of the game and Kimble connected with Peti to tie the game at five, with 12:02 to go. Lycoming and DeSales went goal-for-goal over the final 18 minutes to head into the break tied at eight.
In the second half, DeSales took an 11-9 lead before the Warriors scored a pair of goals off assists from Boyer to knot the game for the seventh time. After trading goals, DeSales scored three in a row to take the only three-goal lead of the game, setting up Lycoming's comeback.
Sophomore
Bailey Parchesky (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post) had her first double-digit save game of the season, finishing with 10 saves. Rachel Sheubrooks tallied four saves while picking up the win in net for the Bulldogs.
Julia Astram led the Bulldogs with five goals. Katie Stordy finished with four goals and Azlin Myers added three.
The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, March 9 at 3 p.m., when they head to Oswego State for a non-conference game at Oswego's Laker Turf Stadium.
