Warriors split with Widener in conference opener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Mikayla Aldenderfer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) retired 12 in a row after allowing two first-inning runs, allowing the Lycoming College softball team to rally for a 4-2 win in the first game of its MAC Commonwealth season-opening doubleheader against Widener University on Sunday, March 24, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex. The Warriors fell in the second game, 7-1.

Junior Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) and freshman Morgan Klosko (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) finished 2-for-3 and drove in two runs each in the first game for the Warriors (10-2 overall, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth). Sophomore Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Junior Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) and seniors Liz Nace (Perasie, Pa./Pennridge), Lexie Kovin (Yardley, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) and Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) recorded a hit.

Aldenderfer (7-1) threw a complete game, allowing two runs on five hits and striking out five. After allowing two runs in the first inning, she settled in by retiring the next 12 Widener (12-4 overall, 1-1 MAC Commonwealth) hitters, giving the Warrior offense time to get into the game.

The Warrior bats came alive in the fifth inning, striking for four runs. Duda led off the fifth with a single and Brown reached safely on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Gessner followed in Brown's lead, reaching on another bunt to load the bases with one out. Kline then ripped a single up the middle to score Brown and Duda and tie the game at two. Klosko closed out the big inning with another single to center to score Gessner and Kline.

Widener threatened with a baserunner in both the sixth and the seventh, but Aldenderfer shut down both rallies.

Kait Jaworski (6-3) was tagged with the loss, allowing four runs on nine hits. Marci Calciano and Ariel Silva each went 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Pride.

In game two, Widener struck for one run in the first, but Lycoming answered with a run of their own in the second to knot the game. Klosko led off with a single and was pinch ran for by freshman Angie King (Cooperstown, Pa./Maplewood). King moved up two bases off a Kovin bunt and a single from freshman Kacee Reitz (Milton, Pa./Milton Area). Duda knocked her in with a sacrifice fly to left field.

Widener tacked on a run in the fifth and sixth, before posting four in the seventh.

Nace (3-1) was handed her first loss, allowing three runs on four hits in 4 1/3 innings of work. Aldenderfer closed out the final 2 2/3, allowing four runs, two earned, on six hits.

Sydney Powell (4-1) picked up the win, tossing a complete game while allowing one run. Carli Benozich led the Pride hitters with four RBI and a triple.

The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday, March 27 at 3 p.m., when they head to Wilkes University for a non-conference doubleheader at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
