McGinniss sets record to lead the Warriors past King’s

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored seven goals and notched an assist to become the Lycoming College women's lacrosse all-time leader in points and also became the sixth player in NCAA Division lll history to record 500 draw controls to lead Lycoming to a 16-10 non-conference victory over King's (Pa.) College on Saturday, March 23, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

McGinniss faked left and blew by her defender to get to the middle of the box, while creating enough space to fire a shot into the bottom left corner of the goal, notching the 277th point of her career with 15:13 left to surpass Megan Wallenhorst's record of 276 points set from 2005-08.

With her fourth of a game-high 17 draw controls, McGinniss became the sixth player in the history of division three women's lacrosse to win 500 draws. McGinniss has 513 draw controls in her career, which is tied for fifth in Division III history with Kaylee Nolan of Augustana (2013-16). With an NCAA-leading 16.1 draws per game, she has accumulated 129 draws already this year, which is second in program history and 31 shy of her own single-season record of 160 set in 2018.

McGinniss was not the only Warrior to have a big day, as freshman Erika Boyer (East Greenville, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) notched six assists, tied for third-most in program history. The freshman also found the back of the net twice to notch a career-high eight points.

Junior Natalie Schroeder (Edgewater, Md./Annapolis) finished with two goals and an assist and senior Thamina Peti (York, Pa./West York Area) notched a hat trick with three scores. Freshman Emma Lehr (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) and sophomore Cecilia Massey (Middletown, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) each added a goal.

The Warriors (2-6 overall) held a 9-8 lead after King's (2-6 overall) scored two minutes into the second half. Lycoming responded in a big way, scoring four straight over the next 10 minutes to build a 13-8 lead.

King's answered with a free position goal. However, the Warriors went on another run with three straight goals to extend their lead to 16-9 with 14:24 to go. The Monarchs scored their final goal at the 11:23 mark, but the Warriors' defense held firm the rest of the way.

The Warriors went into the break holding a 9-7 lead after a first half that showcased five lead changes and four ties. The teams traded scores until two straight Lycoming goals by McGinniss and Peti gave the Warriors a 6-4 lead with 15:24 remaining. The duo of McGinniss and Peti scored two more goals to help the Warriors extend their lead to 9-6 with 3:41 to go before King's scored in the closing 20 seconds.

Freshman Jordyn Altland (Hanover, Pa./South Western) picked up her second win, as she recorded double-digit saves for the second straight game, finishing with 11 stops. Orla Cottell played the full 60 minutes for the Monarchs and also racked up 11 saves.

Jen O'Connor and Emma Lehman each had three goals to lead the Monarchs.

The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday, March 27, when they travel to Misericordia University for a 4 p.m. start at Mangelsdorf Field.
