McGinniss sets record, reaches milestone against Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Senior Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) broke her own program record with 21 draw controls and became the 15th player in Division III history to surpass 400 in a career to lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team, but a 12-goal first half helped Susquehanna University to a 20-14 non-conference win at Sassafras Field on Saturday, March 2.

McGinniss owns the top five spots for draw controls in a game in Warrior history, as she surpassed her previous record of 17 set against Alvernia in 2018.

Trailing 12-8 out of the break, the Warriors (0-2 overall) broke through first with a goal from Hailey Kimble (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) with 26:22 to go. The River Hawks (1-2 overall) scored two straight goals before Lycoming countered with scores from McGinniss and junior Alexis Tchou (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) to keep the deficit at three with 17:15 remaining.

McGinniss' sixth goal came on a free-position shot, while the Warriors were a man-down to make it 16-13 with less than 11 minutes left. That was as close as Lycoming could get, as Susquehanna scored four goals before senior Kim Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) notched her third goal to make up the final margin.

McGinniss added four ground balls and a caused turnover to go with her six goals and 21 draw controls. Rutherford and Kimble had three goals each, while Kimble added two assists, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Tchou and sophomore Cecilia Massey (Middletown, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) each scored their first goal of the season.

Susquehanna scored four times through the opening six minutes before Kimble connected on her first goal of the game to make it 4-1 with 23:44 left in the half. The River hawks countered with a free position goal, before McGinnis scored three consecutive goals over a span of ten minutes to bring the Warriors within one.

Rutherford scored her first goal at the 12:23 mark to even the game at five. Kimble had a hand in the next three Warrior goals, assisting Rutherford and McGinnis while netting one of her own, but the Riverhawks closed out the half outscoring Lycoming 7-3 to head into the break with a 12-8 advantage.

Freshman Jordyn Altland (Hanover, Pa./South Western) made a save in her first career start before being relieved by sophomore Bailey Parchesky (Painted-Post, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post), who finished with four saves for the Warriors. Libby Dex picked up the win for Susquehanna, making 16 saves.

Brooke Klair led Susquehanna with six goals, two assists and five draw controls. Katie Hoerman added four goals and Gabi Toohey, Christine Hoerman and Kathrina Demaio had three goals each.

The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday, March 6, at 3:30 p.m. when they host non-conference opponent Desales at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
