Warriors drop home opener to Hornets

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored six goals and junior Hailey Kimble (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) had five assists, but the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener against non-conference opponent Shenandoah University, on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

McGinniss connected on a game-high six goals on a game-high 14 shots and secured 14 draw controls to lead the Warriors (0-1 overall). Kimble notched a career-high five assists, adding two goals and senior Thamina Peti (York, Pa./West York Area) scored on her only shot attempt.

The Hornets (2-0 overall) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first two minutes before Kimble connected with McGinnis and Peti to even the score. The Hornets scored five unanswered before McGinnis scored her second goal off a free-position shot, to make it, 7-3, with 11:44 to go. Shenandoah outscored the Warriors 2-1 over the final 10 minutes, to head into halftime with a 9-4 advantage.

Two goals out of the half extended the Hornet lead to 11-4. However, the Warriors answered with three straight goals, with McGinniss capitalizing for two man-up scores and Kimble striking for her first goal. Shenandoah, though, scored six to put the game out of reach before Kimble scored her second goal and found McGinnis for her sixth over the final two minutes to make up the final margin.

Senior Kim Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) picked up four ground balls and caused three turnovers.

Kaitlyn Morris led the Hornets with three goals and three assists and Alyson Bittinger added four goals.

In net, Bailey Parchesky (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) played the game's first eight minutes before freshman Jordyn Altland (Hanover, Pa./South Western) took over, making five saves in her Warrior debut.

Gionna Maria picked up the win in goal for the Hornets, playing the full 60 minutes and finishing with 10 saves.

The Warriors are back in action on Saturday, March 2, at 1 p.m., when they head to Susquehanna for a non-conference game at the Sassafras Field.
