READING PA. - Sophomore
D'Yante Doughty (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) scored a game-high 23 points and sparked a second-half comeback for the Lycoming College men's basketball team, but a game-tying 3-pointer as time expired fell short and Alvernia University was able to hold on for a 57-54 victory in MAC Commonwealth action on Wednesday night, Jan. 30 at Jack McCloskey Court.

The Warriors (9-12 overall, 3-9 MAC Commonwealth) cut the Alvernia (10-11 overall, 5-7 MAC Commonwealth) lead to 55-54 with seven seconds remaining after Doughty drove the lane for a layup off an Alvernia missed foul shot. A 2-of-2 trip to the line for Alvernia on the following possession gave the Warriors three seconds to get one final look at a three to tie the game, but the contested shot fell short as time expired.

Doughty was 9-of-16 from the floor, knocking down two 3-pointers and he also pulled in eight rebounds. Senior
Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) recorded his second straight double-double, grabbing 11 rebounds and scoring 13 points. Sophomore
Darius Dangerfield (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech) added six points and three assists.

With Alvernia clinging onto a 29-25 lead out of the break, a deep 3-pointer from junior
Ryan Hollis (Centreville, Md./Saint Peters & Paul) closed the gap, 38-36 with 13:43 remaining. The Golden Wolves countered with an 8-0 run to build their largest lead of the game, 46-36, with 11:42 to go. Doughty scored nine straight points, including two threes and an old-fashioned 3-point play to close the gap to 46-45 with 8:17 left.

Alvernia expanded the lead to 55-50 with 4:55 left before Doughty scored the only four points in the next 4:47 to get the Warriors back within a point.

Both teams battled through a highly contested first-half, showcasing five ties and neither team growing a lead beyond single-digits. After an Alvernia layup tied the game at eight, Chandler knocked down his second three of the game to spark a 7-0 run and give the Warriors a 15-8 lead with 13:44 remaining. That was the largest lead for either team the remaining of the period, as Alvernia used a 7-0 run to tie the game at 15. A Dangerfield jumper with 2:54 left gave the Warriors their last lead of the half, 25-24, before Alvernia used a 5-0 run to close out the period and head into the break holding a four-point advantage.

Justin Thomas led the Golden Wolves with 23 points, while knocking down 5-of-11 3-pointers and pulling in five rebounds.

The Warriors are back on the court on Saturday, Feb. 2 when they host Stevenson University at 3 p.m. in Lamade Gym.
