TOWSON, Md. - A first half goal from freshman
Bailey Gilmore (Ivyland, Pa./Germantown Academy) helped the Lycoming College women's soccer team strike first, but two late second-half goals helped Goucher College sneak away from Beldon Field with a 2-1 win in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening, Sept 4.
Â
The game started an hour late due to excessive heat that caused temperatures to rise into the mid-90s and dew points in the triple digits, so it didn't take the Warriors (0-3 overall) long to get warmed up. In the second minute, Gilmore received a pass from freshman
Megan Oyler (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) and fired in a shot to score the first goal of her young career.
Â
Senior goalkeeper
Helen Ross held a shut out through a period and a half and finished the game with eight saves. She played very aggressive game, picking her spots on when to leave the net and take on attacking Gophers in one-on-one situations.
Â
The Warriors lost the lead when Gracie LeFevre scored off an assist from Syd Benedick in the 74
th minute. The Gophers (3-0 overall) broke the tie in the 80
th minute after Ross stopped a penalty kick attempt, but Christina Yarrish fired the blocked shot into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
Â
Erica Bulzomi stopped three Warrior shots on the night and picked up the win in goal for the Gophers.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field Saturday, Sept. 8, when they host St. Joseph's (L.I) in non-conference action at 1 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
