Wilcox lifts #18 Warriors past Captains

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Jimmy Wilcox (Burlington, Conn./Lewis S. Mills) found the ball crossing the top right of the box and connected, sneaking the shot past the bottom left goalline in the 91st minute to lift the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime victory over the preseason Capital Athletic Conference favorite, Christopher Newport University, on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 22 at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

The Warriors did not wait long into the overtime period to end the game, earning a corner kick in the first minute of the extra period. Senior Sanclair Tueno (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blaire) headed a cross from freshman Tajhon Willis (Edgewood, Md./Joppatowne) to junior Zach Raut (Baltimore, Md./Sparrows Point), who tried a bicycle kick, with the ball spiraling sideways to Wilcox, who found the back of the net for the game winning goal, his second goal of the season.

The Captains (3-4 overall) got on the board first, as Justin Wilson headed the ball into the net off a rebound after a shot from Ethan Larson hit the cross bar in the 33rd minute of the contest.

Lycoming (6-1-1 overall) was down a goal deep into the second half, but sophomore Josh Cruz (Laurel, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) scored his second goal of the season using a free kick from 35 yards out that took a bounce off the cross bar and landed in the net to tie the game in the 69th minute.

Senior Chris Solecki (Hainesport, N.J./Lenape) earned the win for the Warriors making four saves, but none more important than back-to-back saves in the 87th minute that helped keep the tie and send the game into overtime. Zach Pedini played the entire 91 minutes and finished with 9 saves.

The Warriors are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 26, for a 7 p.m. start, when they head to Dallas, Pa. to take on Misercordia University in a non-conference game.
