Webb weaves Warriors past Royals, 2-1

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.- Both sophomore Josh Cruz (Laurel, Md./Laurel) scored in the first half and freshman Colin Wieand (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area)  scored in the second off assists from senior Jake Webb (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) to lift the Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 2-1 non-conference victory against the University of Scranton at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 15.

The Warriors (4-1-1) were able to strike first after a Scranton back-pass penalty gave them the ball inside the goal box in the 36th minute. Webb tapped the ball to Cruz inside the box, who beat the keeper left with a missile from six yards out for his first goal of the season.

The Warriors struck again during the 73rd minute, when Webb used a free kick from 45 yards out to find Colin Wieand, who chipped the ball over the goalie for his first career goal. Webb assisted on both goals, giving him his first two assists on the year.

The Royals (2-2-2) scored late when Jon Roberts crossed the ball into the box from the left endline to Justin Hammert, who scored in the 84th minute.

Senior Chris Solecki (Hainesport, N.J./Lenape) held a shutout through the first 83 minutes and finished the game with a career-high 10 saves. Blake Hammert finished the game with four saves for the Royals.

The Warriors are back in action Sunday, Sept. 16 for a 1 p.m. start when they host Penn College in a crosstown matchup for the Battle of the Lumber at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
