Brown’s bat leads Warriors over Dutchmen

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Sophomore Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) singled in the tying run in the top of the fifth inning then singled in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh to lift the Lycoming College softball team to a 5-4 win over Lebanon Valley College in the opener of a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader Sunday afternoon, April 8 at the Lebanon Valley College Softball Park. The Warriors fell in the second game, 2-1.

Senior Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) led off the top of the fifth with a walk, advanced to second on junior Cayla Treaster's (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) sacrifice bunt and scored on Brown's RBI single up the middle to tie the game at four.

In the bottom half of the inning, with two runners on first and second and one out, Brown got the Warriors (6-10 overall, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth) out of the inning with a 6-4 inning ending double-play when she caught a popup and relayed it to second base to end the scoring threat.

In the top of the seventh, Brown gave the Warriors the lead with a single to left field, which scored freshman Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian), who led off the inning with a double to left field. The Flying Dutchmen led off the bottom of the inning with a double, but senior pitcher Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) retired the next three batters in order to clinch the win.

Six Warriors picked up a hit, led by a 3-for-4, two-RBI effort from Brown and a 2-for-3 game with a triple, run and RBI from Schoenstadt for her third multi-hit effort in the last four games. Sophomore Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) also tallied two hits and Gessner went 1-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI.

Shady earned her second win of the year as she threw a complete game, allowing three earned runs while she striking out four.

Schoenstadt scored the game's first run in the top of the first when her triple to deep right center scored Gessner to make it 1-0.

The Warriors loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second when senior Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) reached on an error and sophomore Lydia Yorks (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) and Shady each walked. Gessner reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Fischer and Schoenstadt's RBI single up the middle scored Yorks to give the Warriors' a 3-0 advantage.

Lebanon Valley (9-7 overall, 5-3 MAC Commonwealth), last year's MAC Commonwealth Championship runner-up, answered in the bottom half of the third with a two-run double from Annie McClain and she scored on an error to tie the game at three. The Flying Dutchmen took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Cheyanne Brown's RBI double scored Robin Feaster.

Junior Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) pitched a strong second game, allowing just two runs and striking out two, as she stranded five runners on base before Lebanon Valley's Kristi Langhans' double to left center scored pinch runner Sarah Musselman with one out in the seventh for the walk-off win.

After Brown's leadoff triple in the top of the fourth, Nace brought her home with an RBI groundout to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Lebanon Valley tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on Tianna Yanoscak's single that scored Annie McClain.

Nace led off the top of the seventh with a single and was moved to third on a sacrifice bunt but she was left stranded.

Brown led the Warriors at the plate, going 1-for-3 with a triple and a run. Nace was also 1-for-3 and had an RBI. Shady, Gessner and Warriner had the other Warrior hits.

Yanoscak was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI and Langhans went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Lebanon Valley.
