ALFRED, N.Y. – Senior
Rachael Shady (Central Mountain, Pa./Lock Haven) posted a hit in each game, but the Lycoming College softball team fell to Alfred University in a non-conference doubleheader, 7-0 and 9-1 in six innings, on Tuesday afternoon, April 10, at Harrington Field.
Â
The Warriors (6-14 overall) fell behind early in the opener, thanks to a two-run home run by Haley Powers to put the Saxons (14-6 overall), coached by Lycoming graduate Luke Wesneski '97, on top, 2-0. Lycoming saved at least one run to end the inning when Elena Ceja was thrown out at the plate by junior
Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area).
Â
Shady settled in and retired the next five batters and only allowed two singles the next three innings. The Saxons, though, scored three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth on Jillian Murray's two-run triple.
Â
Shady went 1-for-3 at the plate and pitched a complete game, stranding eight runners on base.
Â
Powers went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and a home run. Elena Ceja (3-for-4, two runs) also picked up three hits for Alfred, while Murray added two hits, a triple and three RBIs.
Â
Jessica Wilcox went the distance, striking out 10 and allowing just two baserunners in the win.
Â
In the nightcap, senior
Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) went 2-for-3 with a run and Shady, freshman
Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) and junior
Cayla Treaster (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) each added hits for Lycoming.
Â
Alfred jumped out to an early 4-0 lead on Ceja's RBI double with single runs in the first two innings and two runs in the third.
Â
The Warriors answered in the top of the fourth when Schoenstadt led off with a single and eventually scored on an error, but Alfred scored a run in the bottom half of the inning on a single and added four more in the bottom of the sixth to round out the scoring.
Â
Junior
Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) threw all five innings, walking one and stranding eight.
Â
Powers led Alfred with a 4-for-4, two-run effort, Ceja went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and two RBIs and Trisha Whaley went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Â
Shannon Schaefer (7-3) earned the win, throwing six innings of five-hit ball and striking out three.
Â
The Warriors return to action on Thursday, April 12, when they host Wilkes University in a non-conference doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex at 3 p.m.
