Warriors drop close twinbill to Alvernia

READING, Pa. – Junior Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and senior Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) combined to walk just three and give up seven runs, but the Lycoming College women's softball team dropped a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader, 4-0 in the opener and 3-2 in the nightcap, on Saturday afternoon, April 7, at Angelica Park.
 
Nace pitched six innings of six-hit ball, walked just one and struck out five in the first game before Shady pitched 6 2/3 innings, walked two and gave up three earned runs in the second. Senior Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) was 3-for-6 with a run and an RBI to lead the Warriors offensively.
 
In the opener, Alvernia (14-5-1 overall, 2-4 MAC Commonwealth) used a two-run single in the first to jump out to a 2-0 lead and tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single and an RBI triple.
 
Sarah Bystrycki was 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs and JoAnnah Lim was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs for Alvernia.
 
The Warriors picked up four hits, two of which were from Schoenstadt, as Nace and junior Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area), who had a pinch-hit single in the seventh, had the other two.
 
Riley Shields (9-2) threw a complete-game shutout, struck out six and walked one for the Golden Wolves.
 
In the second game, Alvernia scored in the bottom of the first on a bases loaded walk and added another run with an RBI double in the fifth.
 
Lycoming answered with two runs in the top of the sixth to tie it. Shady led off with a walk and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and a fly out. She then scored on Schoenstadt's single through the right side. Junior Cayla Treaster (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) and sophomore Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) each hit singles and Schoenstadt scored to tie the game at two. Alvernia came back in the bottom of the seventh with a single run off Mckenzie Miessau's two-out double that scored Jocelyn Flores.
 
Sarah Reinert led Alvernia at the plate, going 3-for-4, Missau had two doubles and an RBI and Analise Fouracre went 2-for-3.
 
Nicole August gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings and Zoee Garis (2-1) earned the win in relief, throwing a no-hit 1 1/3 innings.
 
Schoenstadt went 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Shady was 1-for-3 with a run and Warriner also went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
 
The Warriors return to action on Sunday, April 8, when they head to Lebanon Valley College for another MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at 1 p.m.
