Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) pitched a strong second game and senior
Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) tied the program record for stolen bases as the Lycoming College softball team split a doubleheader with MAC Commonwealth foe Hood College, falling in the opener 4-2, before taking the second game, 6-3, Sunday afternoon, April 22, at the Hood College Softball Field.
Schoenstadt tied the career mark of 32 stolen bases with Jeanine Evans (1997-00) when she stole second base in the top of the seventh inning of the second game. The speedy centerfielder had two stolen bases in the game and combined to go 4-for-7 with three runs and two RBIs on the afternoon. For the second straight day, Nace (3-10) pitched a solid complete game, giving up just four hits, two earned runs and striking out two.
While Nace kept the Hood offense quiet, the Warrior (8-22 overall, 2-12 MAC Commonwealth) bats came alive with nine hits as three players had multi-hit efforts.
Freshman
Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) led off the game with a single and advanced to second on Nace's sacrifice bunt. Sophomore
Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) reached on an error, advancing Gessner to third. After senior
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Schoenstadt gave the Warriors an early two-run cushion with a two-run single.
Hood (16-16 overall, 7-7 MAC Commonwealth) cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second, but Nace retired nine of the next 10 batters, including six straight, and Lycoming took advantage in the top of the sixth. Shady first reached on an error and Schoenstadt and sophomore
Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) each followed with bunt singles to load the bases. Junior
Cayla Treaster (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) scored Shady on a sacrifice fly to deep left field. After a double steal with Warriner and Schoenstadt and an out, sophomore
Lydia Yorks' (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) singled to score Schoenstadt, giving the Warriors a three-run advantage.
Hood answered with another run in the bottom half of the inning, but Lycoming came back with two more runs. After two quick outs, Schoenstadt singled and stole second. Warriner singled to right field, scoring Schoenstadt and Treaster followed with a double to left field to score Warriner. Hood added another run in the bottom of the seventh, but Nace retired the final two batters with a runner on first to end the game.
Schoenstadt (3-for-4, two runs, two RBIs), Gessner (2-for-3, run) and Warriner (2-for-4, run RBI), batting 1-2-3 in the lineup, each had multiple hits for Lycoming. Treaster was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and Yorks added a hit.
Sophia Lehman took the loss, pitching 6 2/3 innings, walking one and striking out five. Alex Herschman got the final out with a strikeout.
Kayli Paugh led Hood at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs and an RBI.
In the opener, the Warriors faced two one-run deficits in the bottom of the first and bottom of third, but came back to tie the game each time. Hood jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a wild pitch. Yorks led off the top of the third inning with a double and Gessner followed with a single to right center to tie the game at one. The Blazers answered in the bottom of the third with a run.
The Warriors came right back in the top of the fourth when Schoenstadt led off with a walk, advanced to second on a groundout and third on an error. She scored on Treaster's RBI groundout to tie the game. Hood, though, answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on Paugh's two-run double. Warriner, a left fielder, saved at least one run and ended the inning with an assist to Yorks at the plate.
The Warriors battled in the seventh when Nace reached on a one-out single and Shady put runners on first and second with a walk. A flyout to right field, though, ended the threat and the game.
The Warriors outhit Hood, seven-to-six, led by a 2-for-4 effort from Gessner. Treaster and Yorks each went 1-for-3 with a double and Brown, Schoenstadt and Nace had the other three hits.
Kirsten Scott led Hood at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two runs. Paugh went 1-for-2 with two RBIs.
Shady struck out four in six innings and only gave up six hits.
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 24, when they head to Elmira College for a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
