McGinniss nets game-winner against Widener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored on a free-position shot 33 seconds into overtime to cap a seven-goal performance as the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team picked up a dramatic 18-17 MAC Commonwealth win over Widener University on Saturday afternoon, April 14, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

The seven goals in a game are tied for the most in McGinniss' career, as she netted four in the first half, two in the second and the game-winner in overtime. Senior Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) reached 260 career points with five goals and an assist, moving her within 16 of all-time points' leader Megan Wallenhorst (2005-08). Sophomore Kayla DiJoseph (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) tallied three goals and two assists, giving her 40 points on the season.

Widener (4-9 overall, 1-3 MAC Commonwealth) fought back from an early five-goal deficit to hold a lead for much of the second half, building its advantage to three with just under six minutes remaining. Freshman Cecilia Massey (Middletown, Del./Hodgson VoTech) posted her second goal of the year with 5:25 remaining and 14 seconds later, Lazarich scored to get within one at 16-15. Almost three minutes later, Lazarich tied the game and 12 seconds later, sophomore Hailey Kimble (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) gave the Warriors the lead with 2:23 remaining in regulation. Widener's Kelly Lynch tied the game at 17 with 1:25 remaining, setting up overtime.

The Warriors (5-8 overall, 2-2 MAC Commonwealth) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first five minutes, including three goals from Lazarich. They extended their lead to 6-1 before the game was eight minutes old on DiJoseph's first score. The squads each had their three-goal scoring spurts over the next 10 minutes, before Widener scored four straight to get within a point late in the first half. McGinniss netted a score with seven seconds remaining in the period on a dish from DiJoseph to end the Widener scoring run and give Lycoming a 10-8 lead at the break.

Lynch scored seven goals for Widener, adding two assists. Melanie Bert netted three goal for the Pride.

Sophomore Bailey Parchesky (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) made eight saves, earning her fourth win of the season and holding Widener to 2-for-9 on free-position opportunities. Katie Hayes made 19 saves for Widener.

Lycoming held a 27-10 draw control advantage and a 42-37 shot advantage. McGinniss (14) and Lazarich (12) combined to win 26 of those draws. McGinniss also picked up six groundballs.

The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, April 18, when they head to Albright College for a MAC Commonwealth match at 4 p.m.
