Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored four goals and broke her two program records in draw controls as the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team opened the season with a 15-13 non-conference win over Marywood University on Tuesday afternoon, March 6, at Marywood's Turf Field.
McGinniss' 15 draw controls broke her own single-game school-record of 14 set at Susquehanna last season. She won the game's final draw control with 12 seconds remaining to clinch the win. She also broke the school's career record in draws with her second of the game and 226
th of her career, surpassing the mark set by Brooke Strausser '13.
The Warriors (1-0 overall) faced a 12-10 deficit in the game's final 10 minutes, but responded with five goals over the next seven. Senior
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) jumpstarted the comeback when she scored off a picked up groundball by McGinniss. Lazarich scored 44 seconds later, moments after McGinniss' record-tying 14
th draw control. With the game tied at 12 with 8:11 remaining, Lycoming didn't stop, as sophomore
Kayla DiJoseph (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) scored on a free position goal to give her team its first lead of the second half.
After a Warrior timeout, Kimble made it 14-12 with 3:15 remaining and then after a draw control by freshman
Taylor Herberger (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post), Kimble iced the game with her fifth goal.
Five different Warriors tallied a goal and two more added assists. Lazarich led the squad with six points on four goals and two assists and added three draw controls. McGinniss notched four goals and an assist, in addition to her 15 draw controls and seven groundballs. Kimble scored five times and senior
Caroline Mitchell (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) had two assists. Herberger picked up two groundballs to go with a goal.
Marywood (2-2 overall) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, before the Warriors rattled off four straight goals, including two from McGinniss and one each from Kimble and Herberger for her first career point. Neither team could pull away after that with the biggest lead of the first half reaching two, as the game headed into the second half tied at eight.
Freshman
Ayana Hagan (Brooklyn, N.Y./KIPP College Prep) played a strong final 30 minutes, making 12 saves. Sophomore
Bailey Parchesky (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) made five saves in the first half.
Sam Bussinelli led Marywood with four goals and an assist and Gwyneth Gleason also scored four goals to go with seven draw controls. Caitlin Watson and Gina Babcock each scored twice for the Pacers.
Lycoming took 18 shots and picked up 22 groundballs, while Marywood had 37 shots and picked up 32 groundballs. The Warriors were 6-for-6 on free-position shots and won 21 draw controls compared to the Pacers' nine.
The Warriors return to action on Thursday, March 8, for a 5 p.m. non-conference game at Buffalo State.
