Offensive output leads Warriors to sweep of Bears

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With a combined 22 hits, 18 runs and six players that recorded multi-hit days, the Lycoming College softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader from SUNY Potsdam, 11-3 in six innings and 7-3, on Sunday afternoon, March 25, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Senior Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) went 1-for-4 with a run and stolen base in the opener before going 2-for-2 with two runs and another stolen base in the nightcap, as she became the 14th Warrior in program history to tally 100 career hits. Her 30 career stolen bases are also just short of Jeanine Evans' school-record of 32. Sophomore Darci Warriner (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) recorded her first career home run with a two-run shot in the fourth inning of the second game, as she finished 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBIs and two runs.

The offensive explosion for the Warriors (5-9 overall) started with an 11-hit effort in the opener as all nine batters recorded a hit and three recorded two.

Lycoming jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to three stolen bases. Senior Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) led off with a double and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian). Sophomore Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) later walked, setting up a double steal scenario in which Shady stole home and Brown took second. Schoenstadt also reached on an error and Brown scored on the play.

The Warriors put up two more runs in the bottom of the third when junior Cayla Treaster's (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) RBI double scored Gessner, who reached with a leadoff single. Schoenstadt followed with a single and junior Liz Nace's (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) RBI groundout made it 4-0.

Potsdam came back with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the deficit to one, but five Lycoming hits and three Potsdam errors put the game away. Singles from Nace and senior Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) put runners on the corners with one out. An RBI groundout from Shady scored Nace, Gessner's single up the middle scored Fischer and sophomore Lydia Yorks (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area), who reached earlier in the inning on an error, scored on another error to make it 7-3. After Treaster singled, Schoenstdadt reached on an error and scored Treaster. Junior Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) laced a two-out single to shallow right field, scoring both Schoenstadt and Treatser for the walkoff win.

Nace picked up the complete-game win for her second of the season. Treaster went 2-for-3 in the game with a double, three runs and two RBIs. Fischer went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Gessner notched two hits, scored twice and added an RBI.

Megan Fish and Lauren Brace each were 2-for-3 at the plate while Brooke Falsion had a two-run double.

In the second game, Potsdam got on the board with a first-inning run before the Warriors answered in the bottom half when Shady scored on a passed ball.

After Schoenstadt reached on a single through the left side in the fourth inning, the 100th hit of her career, and advanced to third on a stolen base and wild pitch, Warriner cleared the left file fence by more than five feet for her first career homer, and the Warriors first of the season, for the 3-1 lead.

The Bears answered with two more runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game, but Lycoming countered with four in the bottom half of the inning. The first three Warrior batters reached base and Warriner's two-run single to right-center made it 5-3. Duda's RBI single scored Schoenstadt and freshman Meghan Crosby's (Lykens, Pa./Upper Dauphin Area) RBI groundout scored Warriner to make it 7-3.

Shady went 2-for-4 with a run while also picking up the win in the circle as she struck out six, including five straight at one point, and allowed just two earned runs in a complete game. Schoenstadt went 2-for-2 with two runs and a stolen base and Duda also picked up two hits with an RBI.

Samantha Hubinsky led Potsdam with two hits and a run while Sydney Miller went 1-for-3 with an RBI.

The Warriors return to action on Thursday, March 29, at Lebanon Valley College in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at 3 p.m.
