WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Receiving two strong pitching performances in which the starters gave up a combined two earned runs, the Lycoming College softball team fell twice in its MAC Commonwealth doubleheader with Albright College, dropping a 4-3 opener and 1-0 nightcap in eight innings, on Saturday afternoon, March 24, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Junior
Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) pitched a complete first game, struck out three and allowed just one earned while stranding seven Lion runners on base. In the second game, senior
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) pitched all eight innings, gave up six hits, struck out three and stranded seven runners on base.
In the opener, after Shady led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt, scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore
Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) to give the Warriors (3-9 overall, 0-2 MAC Commonwealth) an early 1-0 lead. Albright plated three in the top of fourth thanks to a bases clearing double from Brooke Yerger before Lycoming answered with another run in the bottom half of the inning on Nace's RBI groundout that scored senior
Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) to make it a one-run margin.
The Warriors tied the game in the bottom of the fifth after freshman
Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian) scored Shady, who reached on a one-out triple, with a sacrifice fly. Albright, though, scored the game-winner in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI double from Camille Sears.
Shady went 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and a triple and Brown and Gessner picked up RBIs for the Warriors.
Yerger led the Lions (6-4 overall, 2-0 MAC Commonwealth) at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs and the game-winning run. Riley Gerenda allowed three hits and struck out four in the complete-game win.
The Lycoming defense stopped two runs early in the second game. In the top of the second inning, Albright's Jessica Rodriguez tried to advance home on a wild pitch but was tagged out at the plate by Gessner to end the inning. In the top of the sixth, with a runner on third and one out, Jordan Chell broke for home on a suicide squeeze attempt, but Shady got the ball to Gessner at the plate to keep the game scoreless.
Camille Sears broke the scoreless game in the top of the eighth inning, though, with a one-out solo home run to right-center field. Freshman
Meghan Crosby (Lykens, Pa./Upper Dauphin Area) singled in the bottom of the inning, but Lycoming was unable to get her past first base.
