Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Warriors’ comeback falls just short in overtime to King’s

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Sophomore Alexis Tchou (Mount Airy, Md./Urbana) gathered the groundball, held her stick high above her head and while in a crowd of King's College defenders, fired in the game-tying goal with seven seconds remaining in regulation to bring back the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team all the way back from a seven-goal first-half deficit, but King's netted the game-winner two minutes into overtime to win, 14-13, on Thursday evening, March 22, at McCarthy Stadium in a non-conference contest.

After King's turned the ball over with 71 seconds remaining, senior Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) raced about 35 yards, struggling to pick up the groundball before she was fouled. She controlled the ball in front of the net, found a cutting junior Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph), whose shot was deflected and was picked up by Tchou, and seconds later she netted the game-tying goal.

Sophomore Kayla DiJoseph (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) tallied four goals and two assists, McGinniss also added four goals and sophomore Hailey Kimble (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) and Lazarich each notched two goals for Lycoming.

The Warriors (3-4 overall) fell behind 8-1 late in the first half, but finished the final six minutes on a 3-0 scoring run, aided by goals from DiJoseph, Lazarich and McGinniss to go into the half down four.

In the opening nine minutes of the second half, Lycoming continued its comeback, as it scored four goals, two each from McGinniss and Kimble to tie the game.

King's countered with two goals in the next five minutes before McGinniss and DiJoseph scored in a two-minute span to again tie the game. The Monarchs came back and scored two of their own. Lazarich netted her 30th goal of the season and DiJoseph added her 10th to make it 12-12. With 3:28 remaining, King's again took a one-goal lead, setting up Tchou's game-tying score.

In overtime, the Warriors' won the draw, but the King's keeper stopped a point blank shot, allowing the Monarchs to get a groundball. On their first possession of overtime, Amanda Carroll found the lower corner for the game-winning goal.

McGinniss earned 10 draw controls and picked up three ground balls. Junior Kim Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) also picked up three ground balls for the Warriors.

Anastasia Araviakis notched four goals and two assists and Carroll tallied four goals and an assist for the Monarchs.

Sophomore Bailey Parchesky (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) played the first 30 minutes in goal, making five saves, while freshman Ayana Hagan (Brooklyn, N.Y./KIPP College Prep) made four saves after halftime.

King's Oria Cottell made seven saves to earn the win.

The Warriors return to action on Tuesday, March 27, when they host Susquehanna University at 3:30 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
