WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) struck out seven and left 13 on base, while also adding two hits at the plate, but the Lycoming College softball team fell to King's College, 5-2, in the opener of the doubleheader before dropping the nightcap in nine innings, 7-1, Thursday afternoon, March 22, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex in a non-conference doubleheader.
Â
In the twin-bill opener, Lycoming (3-7 overall) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning as Shady reached base on a one-out single, stole second and sophomore
Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) laced a two-out single to center field for the 1-0 advantage. In the top half of the inning, with the bases loaded and behind in the count 3-0, Shady was able to get out of the jam and strand three of her 13 runners on base.
Â
King's scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings before Lycoming tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Junior
Cayla Treaster (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) started the inning with a leadoff double to deep center field. Sophomore
Darci Warriner's (Wellsboro, Pa./Wellsboro Area) sacrifice bunt moved her to third. Then a pitch later, Treaster scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at two.
Â
The Monarchs, though, scored three runs in the top half of the seventh to take the win.
Â
Shady led Lycoming at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run and Brown also picked up two hits, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Treaster went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Â
Samantha Bloom earned the win for King's in relief, throwing 6 2/3 innings of six-hit ball. Kelcie Senchak and Megan Beaupre each went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Monarchs.
Â
In the second game, junior
Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) was perfect through 3 1/3 innings and allowed two hits and no runs through the first seven, but after the international tiebreaker rule in which a runner is placed on second in extra innings, King's scored a run in the seventh and six in the ninth to put the game away.
Â
The Warriors fell behind 1-0 in the top of the eight, but after being placed on second to start, Warriner advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on junior
Lexie Kovin's (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) single to tie the game at one. Shady hit a fly ball to the warning track, nearly winning the game for the Warriors with two outs in the inning.
Â
In the ninth, King's used five hits to score six times.
Â
Nicole Kirse earned the win for King's, allowing two hits and striking out four in the complete game. Mackenzie Yori went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Lexi Wolk picked up two hits for the Monarchs.
Â
The Warriors return to action on Saturday, March 24, when they host Albright College in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at 1 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.Â
