Warriors hold Knights back in 66-49 win

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Allowing just three points in the final nine minutes of the third quarter after Arcadia University tied the game with the first bucket after halftime, the Lycoming College women's basketball team sprinted out to its third straight MAC Commonwealth win, 66-49, on Senior Day Saturday, Feb. 3, at Lamade Gym.

The Warriors reached 16 wins for the first time since 1999-00 with the win, improving to 16-5 overall and 10-3 in the MAC Commonwealth, reaching 10 conference wins for just the fifth time in program history. Arcadia fell to 8-12 overall and 3-8 in conference play.

Lycoming took the lead with a pair of free throws from senior Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) with 7:10 left in the third, starting a run of 12 straight points that was wrapped up by four straight points from senior Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) with 4:01 left in the quarter. The Warriors held a 16-5 advantage in scoring in the period, heading into the fourth with a 50-37 lead.

The Knights cut the lead to 11 points with 2:15 left in the final period before sophomore Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) scored the final six points of the game, four coming on free throws.

McFadden led the Warriors with 19 points, five assists and five steals and Mueller finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Sophomore Morgan Mader (Cresco, Pa./Pocono Mountain East) added 14 points, canning four 3-pointers. Sipple posted six rebounds and four assists and freshman Erica Lutz (Bernville, Pa./Hamburg) posted five points.

The Warriors started the game with a run of nine straight points, with Mader posting five points and Mueller adding four in the run. Moments later, a transition 3-pointer from Mader made it 14-2, but Arcadia was able to cut the lead to six points by the end of the quarter at 24-18. In the second period, the Warriors built the lead back to 12 at 32-20 off a 3-pointer from McFadden, but Arcadia used three straight triples to cut the gap to three points and an old-fashioned 3-point play from Taylor Dunn cut the lead to a pair at 34-32 heading into the break. The Knights tied the game with the first layup of the second half, as Dunn found Sydney Cyr, setting up the Warriors' game-clinching run.

Dunn finished with 19 points for the Knights and Jamie Manzo added 10 points. Camille Menns led the team with 11 rebounds, as the Knights held a 36-30 advantage on the glass, but were held to 33 percent shooting (17-of-52).

The Warriors will get back on the court on Saturday, Feb. 10, when they head to Stevenson for a key MAC Commonwealth matchup. The women's game will tip at 1 p.m. before the men play at 3 p.m.
