WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Holding Marymount University to 29 percent shooting and 13 percent on 3-pointers, the Lycoming College men's basketball team used an total-team defensive effort to win its second game in as many days, 66-49, on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 19, at Lamade Gym.
Â
The 49 points allowed is the lowest total given up this year and the lowest since holding Messiah to 36 in 2017.
Â
Lycoming (7-6 overall) outscored Marymount (7-5 overall), 36-24, in the second half, and used a 26-11 run over the game's final 12 minutes to put the game out of reach. Sophomore
Darius Dangerfield (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech) was able to consistently weave his way through the Marymount full-court press and freshman
Matt Ilodigwe (Wilmington, Del./Concord) drilled two threes during the run, accounting for eight Warrior points in the run.
Â
Freshman
Markanthony Fidelis (Largo, Md./DeMatha Catholic) finished with his first-career double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Ilodigwe continued his hot stretch, netting 11 points, while hitting 3-of-6 shots from three and he finished with a game-high four assists. Senior
Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) matched his career-high in consecutive games, scoring 14 points.
Â
The Warriors used pressure perimeter defense and an efficient offense to go into the half with a 30-25 lead. Lycoming forced 11 turnovers which led to 10 fastbreak points compared to Marymount's four. Marymount scored the first basket of the game before the Warriors used an 11-4 run to get a five-point lead. After Marymount took a one-point lead, the Warriors
went back to work, building a 29-23 lead, the largest of the half, thanks to a nice press break by sophomore
D'Yante Doughty (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) and Dangerfield, and six points in the paint by freshman
D'Andre Edmond (Pflugerville, Texas/Pflugerville). Fidelis led all scorers at the break with 13 points.
Â
The Warriors forced 20 Marymount turnovers, while only committing nine, and only allowed two 3-pointers, the lowest total by an opponent this season.
Â
Sophomore Steve Etienne led the Saints with a double-double, finishing with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Â
The Warriors are back on the court after the New Year when they host the Louis Fleming Basinger Memorial Tournament on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 4-5 in Lamade Gym. Lycoming hosts Penn State Abington in the opening round at 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 4.
