Warriors tie No. 1 Messiah in MAC Championship, fall in shootout

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Senior Chris Solecki (Hainsport, N.J./Lenape) made a postseason-career high 10 saves, including a diving save with 10 seconds left in double overtime for the second-seeded Lycoming College men's soccer team, as Lycoming played the nation's No. 1-ranked team, Messiah College, to a 0-0 double overtime tie. However, Messiah was able to win the shootout, 4-1, for the conference title and the conference's automatic bid, on Saturday night, Nov. 3, at Shoemaker Field.

The Warriors (15-3-2 overall) will now wait to see if the gutsy performance against the Falcons (16-0-3 overall) can earn an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament. Lycoming sits seventh in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region poll. The tournament selection show will be on NCAA.com on Monday, Nov. 5, at 1 p.m.

Nick West started the shootout with a make before sophomore Jared Moses (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh School) tied the score at 1-1. Messiah then connected on three penalty kicks in a row unanswered by Cooper Robbins, Samuel Ruiz Plaza and Shay Quintin to secure the victory.

Solecki, who finished regulation with seven saves, made his greatest impact in overtime. The senior had diving saves in the second and third minutes of the first overtime, and another in the final 10 seconds in double overtime to send the game to a shootout.

The Warriors did not give up a goal despite facing 24 shots and eight corner kicks from the Falcons. Senior defender Sainclair Tueno (Silver Springs, Md./Montgomery Blair), who took two of the teams three shots on goal, ran down a streaking Messiah forward on a fast break and made a slide tackle to knock the ball away, to keep the game tied in the 40th minute.

Sophomore Alex Henry (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) gave the Warriors their best chance to get on the board in the 48th minute, when he fired a shot from 25-yards out that just missed the upper right corner of the goal.

The Falcons were led by tournament MVP Connor Bell, who tallied one save in the game and made a diving save in the shootout to secure the victory.
