Second-half goals lead #14 Warriors past Arcadia

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Josh Cruz (Laurel, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute off a free kick to lead the No. 14 Lycoming College men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory in MAC Commonwealth action against Arcadia University on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 20, in front of a packed crowd at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

The Warriors (13-2-1 overall, 5-1 MAC Commonwealth) have won 11 of their last 12, including eight games by one goal. The team clinched a spot in the MAC Commonwealth Championship for the fifth time in the last six years with the win.

Freshman Tyler Flood (Carlisle, Pa./Big Spring) broke the scoreless tie late in the second half when he connected on a header off a free kick from senior Jake Webb (Fairless Hills, Pa./Conwell-Egan Catholic) from 20 yards out. The goal gave Flood the first of his career and Webb his MAC Commonwealth leading 10th assist.

The Knights (5-9-1 overall, 2-4 MAC Commonwealth) tied the game in the 81st minute when Ryan Hammer converted a free kick from just outside the box.

Cruz answered, though, scoring the game winning-goal with less than seven minutes remaining off a free kick from just outside the top of the box. Catching the defense off guard he fired a quick shot into the bottom left part of the goal, scoring his third goal of the year.

Senior Chris Solecki (Hainesport, N.J./Lenape) finished with six saves, including a point-blank save in the 70th minute in a one-on-one situation to keep the score tied.

Jake Varrato tallied four saves for the Knights.

The Warriors are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 23 for a 3:30 p.m. start when they host MAC Commonwealth opponent Lebanon Valley, ranked eighth and one spot ahead of the Warriors in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
