Jennings has career night as Warriors clinch postseason berth

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Ramadan Jennings (Jackson, Ohio/Life Skills) scored a career-high 25 points and seniors Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) and Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) each notched double-doubles as the 11th-ranked Lycoming College men's basketball team clinched a MAC Commonwealth Championship tournament berth with its 79-66 win over Alvernia University on Wednesday night, Jan. 31, at Lamade Gym.

The Warriors (19-2 overall, 10-2 MAC Commonwealth) clinched a postseason berth for the fourth straight year with Jennings leading the way off the bench as he hit 10-of-12 shots, grabbed seven rebounds and scored 16 of his 25 points after halftime. Newbold recorded his second double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, as he hit 7-of-10 from the field. Wallace hit 5-of-8 shots for a 10-point and 11-rebound double-double.

With the game tied at 46 five minutes into the second half, the Warriors began to take control. It started with an offensive rebound and a two-handed dunk by Jennings to jumpstart a 12-1 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from sophomore Ronald Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King). The closest Alvernia got the rest of the game was seven points just a couple minutes after the Warriors took that 11-point lead. The Golden Wolves got within nine with 5:15 remaining, but it was turned into another double-digit deficit on a steal and dunk from Wallace with 2:47 left in the game. The lead ballooned to its biggest of the game at 16 on an and-one layup from Jefferson in the final minute.

In the first half, the Warriors put up eight points before Alvernia had a chance to answer and that lead grew to 15-5 as they hit 7-of-8 shots in the opening four minutes. The Golden Wolves, though, climbed back and caught fire from behind  the 3-point line and eventually took a 31-28. The Warriors were able to come back and take a 40-38 lead into the break after a tip-in from Newbold in the closing minute.

Overall, the Warriors outscored Alvernia 40-6 in the paint, including a 22-2 advantage in the second half. Lycoming also held decisive advantages in rebounding (48-32), second-chance points (25-15) and bench points (41-6) while also hitting 47 percent of its shots compared to 36 percent for Alvernia.

Jefferson totaled 10 points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench and junior T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) came off the bench for six points and two rebounds. Freshman Darius Dangerfield (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech) added seven points and an assist.

Mike Miller led the Golden Wolves (9-11 overall, 4-7 MAC Commonwealth) with 28 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including 8-of-14 from behind the arc. Alex Shippen added 15 points, seven assists and five rebounds as he hit 5-of-10 3-pointers.

The Warriors return to action on Saturday, Feb. 3, against Arcadia University at 3 p.m. at Lamade Gym, wrapping up a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader.
