Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) finished with 16 points and freshman
Darius Dangerfield (Abingdon, Md./Harford Tech) added a career-high 14, but the sixth-ranked Lycoming College men's basketball team couldn't come back from its second halftime deficit of the year, falling to hot-shooting Lebanon Valley College, 81-71, on Wednesday evening, Jan. 3, at Sorrentino Gym in MAC Commonwealth action.
It was the Warriors (13-1 overall, 4-1 MAC Commonwealth) first loss of the season after rattling off a program-record 13 straight wins to start the season. It also snapped an 11-game conference win streak, the seventh-longest in Division III entering the game.
Senior
Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) added four rebounds and freshman
Darius Dangerfield (Abingdon, Md./Hartford Tech) posted three assists off the bench.
Lycoming fell behind by double-digits midway through the first half at 21-11, but countered with a 20-6 run to take a 31-27 lead on a 3-pointer from Dangerfield. Lebanon Valley (10-4 overall, 4-1 MAC Commonwealth) ended the first half on a 14-2 run to take an eight-point lead into the break.
Freshman
D'Yante Doughty (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) started the second half with a layup, but the Flying Dutchmen scored 14 straight in less than four minutes to take a 20-point lead. That lead grew to 25 at 62-37 with 13:52 remaining, but Lycoming held Lebanon Valley scoreless the next five minutes as the Warriors went on a 16-0 run capped by two free throws from Newbold to make it 62-53 with 8:59 left. Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) with 3:45 left.
Wallace totaled 10 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals and freshmen
Devon Taylor (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) and Doughty each notched seven points.
Sam Light, the conference's leading scorer, led Lebanon Valley with 27 points and five rebounds, as he hit 6-of-12 3-pointers. Andy Orr added 15 points and 12 rebounds and Will Boccanfuso notched 11 points.
The Warriors return to action on Saturday, Jan. 6, at 1 p.m. when they host Stevenson University in a MAC Commonwealth game at Lamade Gym.
