Doughty’s free throws lift Warriors over Albright

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman D'Yante Doughty (Baltimore, Md./Calvert Hall) hit two free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining to cap off a career night and lift the 12th-ranked Lycoming College men's basketball team to an 86-85 come-from-behind win over Albright College on Wednesday evening, Jan. 10, at Lamade Gym in a MAC Commonwealth game.

Doughty scored a career-high 18 points, including 14 in the second half, while hitting 6-of-11 shots. Senior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) notched his first double-double of the season with 20 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks in 25 minutes of action. Junior Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) set a career-high with 16 points, four rebounds and three steals.

The Warriors (15-1 overall, 6-1 MAC Commonwealth) faced their biggest deficit of the game at 14 with 4:42 remaining. A fastbreak 3-pointer from Doughty 22 seconds later cut that deficit to 11, then two free throws from Wallace got Lycoming back within single digits. The teams traded buckets over the next four possessions before Lycoming got within seven on two free throws from senior Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic). Two more makes at the charity stripe from James cut the deficit down to five with 2:15 remaining.

Sophomore Damani Myers (Baldwin, N.Y./St. Mary's) hit junior T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) on an inbounds pass and Duckett nailed his third 3-pointer to make it a two-point game with just over a minute remaining. A putback layup from Albright's DeJuan Smith extended the lead to four before Doughty answered with an acrobatic layup with 25 seconds remaining. Fred Rowles hit 1-of-2 from the free throw line with 22 seconds left. Sophomore Ronald Jefferson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Christ the King) hit a driving layup to make it a one-point game with 14 seconds left.

After two missed free throws from Albright, Doughty was fouled going for the loose ball off the second miss, setting up his game-winning free throws.

Duckett scored 11 points off the bench while grabbing two rebounds and Newbold added 10 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Jefferson totaled eight points, four rebounds, a steal and a block.

The Warriors forced 25 turnovers with 12 steals that led to 29 points. Lycoming held a 44-24 point in the paint advantage while it also hit 27-of-36 free throws.

Brandon Lindsay led Albright (11-3 overall, 4-2 MAC Commonwealth), which is receiving votes in the D3hoops.com poll, with 20 points and four rebounds while Delascio Dancy totaled 16 points and six assists. Samuel Majekodunmi added 15 points and five assists.
