Warriors come up short against Widener

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Despite a comeback effort that included a penalty kick goal from senior Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) in the final minute, the Lycoming College women's soccer team fell 2-1 to Widener University in each teams' MAC Commonwealth opener on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 30, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Lazarich earned the penalty kick at 89:18 and fired the shot into the bottom right corner to cut the Widener lead in half. It was Lazarich's seventh goal of the season, third most in the conference, and the 54th of her career, adding on to her already program record.

After a scoreless first half in which the Lycoming defense limited Widener to minimal quality chances, the Pride scored two second-half goals. The first coming off a deflected shot from Alexa Byers that Eva Reyes followed up on for the 1-0 advantage at 48:05. Abby Fenton scored Widener's second goal off a free kick from Kimmy Lyons in the 76th minute.

Freshman goalkeeper Madi Welliver (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) made eight saves in the loss and was very aggressive off her line, smothering other countess attempts. Sam Thach watched four shots in the win.

The Warriors return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 4, when they head to Lebanon Valley to take on the Flying Dutchmen in another MAC Commonwealth game at 4 p.m.
