Two second half goals lead Warriors to win over Lions

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Thanks to two second half goal and some stellar ball control from the front seven, the Lycoming College women's soccer team defeated Penn State Altoona, 3-2, in non-conference action on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 16, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

Penn State Altoona (1-4 overall) took an early lead on the first of two goals from Shoshana Mahoney in the sixth minute. The Warriors (2-4 overall) scored the next three goals, though, with the first coming from sophomore Mackaella Goodwin (Madison, N.J./Madison), who made a great run behind the defense and senior Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) found her with a thru ball at 34:43 for the equalizer.

The Warriors scored two goals early in the second half, with Lazarich scoring her fifth goal of the season when freshman Elle Sarracco's (Wantage, N.J./High Point Regional) shot deflected off the keeper and Lazarich followed with a shot into an open net for the 2-1 lead in the 49th minute. Lazarich then hooked up with Sarracco 12 minutes later when she crossed the ball into the box and Sarracco fired into the bottom corner to make it 3-1.

Mahoney added her second goal of the game at 69:26, but the Warrior defense held strong the rest of the way thanks to a couple crucial clears from sophomore Madi McConnell (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) and freshman Taylor Gessner (Lewisburg, Pa./Meadowbrook Christian).

With Lazarich's two assists, she now has 11 in her career, moving her into the top 10 in career assists in program history. She also added to her program bests in career goals (52) and total points (115).

The Warriors outshot the Lions, 19-16, with a 14-6 second-half advantage. Freshman goalie Madi Welliver (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) picked up her second win of the season, as she made eight saves. Sydney Emershaw also made eight saves for the Lions.

The Warriors return to action on Sunday, Sept. 17, when they take on Keuka in another non-conference game at 1 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
