Kline, Kunes, Warriors finish off record-breaking season

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) tied the school record for doubles and broke one for runs scored in a season and senior Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) also tied the record for doubles to lead the Lycoming College softball team, which broke the program record for wins as it swept Misericordia University, 4-0 and 9-1, in a non-conference doubleheader to finish its 2017 season on Sunday afternoon, April 30.

Kline enjoyed one of the finest offensive seasons in program history, setting school records for at bats (137), runs scored (38), hits (61), total bases (89), tying one for doubles (12) and also posting the fourth highest batting average (.445) in a season.

Kunes, who also broke the single-season RBI record (36) earlier in the season, also tied the mark for doubles (12) and hit by pitches (6) this year. Her 46 hits and 76 total bases are both second only to Kline. She finished her career second in school history with 30 doubles, 179 total bases and nine home runs and third with 73 RBIs and 116 hits.

Lycoming, meanwhile, used the two wins to improve to 24-14 (.632), setting a new program standard for wins in a season, surpassing the mark of 22 set during the 1995 (22-8), 1997 (22-5) and 2003 (22-12-1) seasons. Misericordia, which finished tied for third in the MAC Freedom, moved to 20-20 overall.

In the first game, the Warriors used a four-run fifth-inning rally to cruise to a 4-0 win to break the school's single season win record.

Junior Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) tossed a four-hit shutout in the win for her 13th win of the year (13-8), which is tied for third in school history with Mary Beth Schwidenhammer, who went 13-4 in 1995.

Shady allowed just two runners to reach second in the game, while striking out a season-high seven and allowing just one walk, three singles and a double.

Lycoming's offense got started in the fifth, as junior Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) singled with a liner off the pitcher's glove before Shady followed with a base hit up the middle. After a fielder's choice kept runners on first and second, Kline delivered an opposite field single that tipped off the second baseman's glove to score Shady. Junior Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) followed with an opposite field triple to right to score two runs and she scored the fourth run on a double down the line by Kunes.

Schoenstadt led the Warriors, going 2-for-3 with a triple and two RBI. Abby Marzzacco led the Cougars, going 2-for-3.

Brooke Moyle (8-9) took the loss for the Cougars, allowing eight hits and four runs in five innings. She walked one and struck out three.

In the second game, Kline went 3-for-3 with a double, three runs and a RBI and Kunes went 3-for-4, with two runs, two doubles and two RBI to power the Warriors to a 9-1, six-inning win.

The Warriors got started with two runs in the first inning, as Shady led off with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt by junior Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) and scored on a double down the line from Kline. After a groundout, Kline scored on a double from Kunes.

In the second, sophomore Cayla Treaster (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) reached on a leadoff single, took second on an error and after a groundout, she scored on another error. The Cougars answered with a run off two hits, a hit batter and a walk in the top of the third, but left the bases loaded.

Lycoming got the run back in the bottom of the inning, with Kunes leading off with a single before moving up a base off a sac bunt from senior Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg). She scored on a single to right from Treaster.

Lycoming tacked on two more to make it 6-1 in the fourth inning, as Kline singled to right, setting up a triple to right by Schoenstadt, who scored when the relay throw was overthrown. The Warriors ended the game in the sixth, as Kline singled to lead off before scoring on a double to right from Kunes with one out. An error allowed Crabb to reach to put runners on the corners. After Crabb stole second, Treaster lifted a sac fly to left to score Kunes and move Crabb up a base before junior Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) delivered the game-ending single to right.

The Warriors wrapped 13 hits in the first game, as Treaster went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Duda went 2-for-2 with a RBI. Shady also went 2-for-4 with a run.

Misericordia was held to just five hits by Nace, who tossed another complete game. She walked one and struck out three to finish the season 7-3 overall and with a 1.70 ERA and nine complete games in 11 starts.

Maddie Stebich (0-2) took the loss for the Cougars, allowing three earned runs and seven hits in 2 1/3 innings.
