WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore
Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) became the first player in the Lycoming College women's lacrosse program's history to score 50 goals in her first two years of collegiate play, but seventh-ranked Messiah College scored the first eight goals en route to a 16-5 MAC Commonwealth win on Saturday, April 22, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Â
McGinniss scored a pair of goals to give her 51 goals on the season after she scored 66 during her freshman season to join Megan Wallenhorst (2006-08) and
Meghenn Jackson (2015-16) as the only players to score 50 goals in back-to-back years.
Â
Messiah scored its first goal 86 seconds into the game and used a four-goal run in four minutes midway through the first half to build an 8-0 lead. However, McGinniss scored on a free-position shot with 7:06 left to end the run and make it 8-1 at the break.
Â
In the second half, McGinniss scored another free-position goal with 28:23 left before junior
Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) scored with 25:39 left. Freshman
Hailey Kimble (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post) scored on a pass from McGinniss with 23:58 to make it a four-goal game, but Messiah's Claire Stikeleather ended the run, scoring twice in a short span to start a run of six straight goals that put the game out of reach.
Â
McGinniss finished with two goals, an assist, four draw controls, three groundballs and two caused turnovers. Lazarich added four draw controls and sophomore
Kim Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) added four groundballs and a caused turnover.
Â
Stikeleather led Messiah with four goals and an assist and Courtney Wagner added three goals and three assists. Jenna Stover added three goals and an assist. Ida Ehrhardt posted six draw controls and Kendra Herbenar caused three turnovers.
Â
In net, senior
Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) (8-5) made eight saves while also picking up four groundballs and causing two turnovers. Senior
Casey Martindale (Davidsonville, Md./Archbishop Spalding) also stopped one shot in two minutes of action. Alexa Dipeso (12-2) stopped four shots in the win for Messiah.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 25, when they host Stevenson University in another MAC Commonwealth matchup at 4 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
