WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) tossed a four-hitter to win her 10
th game of the season to lead the Lycoming College softball team in a twinbill split with Alfred University on Tuesday, April 18, winning the first game 3-1, before falling in the second, 4-1, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
Â
Shady (10-5) became the fourth pitcher in program history to win 10 games in back-to-back seasons and the first since Holly Lansberry did it in 2010-11, as the junior allowed just six baserunners and one past second base in a 3-1 win in the first game.
Â
Shady struck out five in the complete game and also got the benefit of several nice plays in the field. Senior catcher
Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg) caught a runner stealing in the second. In the sixth, with runners on first and second and no outs, freshman
Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) effectively ended a rally by catching a line drive at second base and tagging the runner moving from first base for the double play. In the seventh, freshman
Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) picked up a redirected ball in the hole and made a long throw from shortstop for an out.
Â
Alfred (14-14 overall) took the lead in the fourth inning, with Liz Thompson leading off with a single, stealing second, taking third on a wild pitch and scoring on a sac fly.
Â
Lycoming rallied in the bottom of the frame, though, as senior
Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) led off the frame with a single through the left side before Crabb delivered a 3-2 pitch through the right side to put runners on the corners. Junior
Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) followed with a game-tying single into right field that moved freshman pinch runner
Lydia Yorks (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) to third. After a strikeout, sophomore
Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) hit a grounder to third to score Yorks. Junior
Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) followed with a line single into center field to score Schoenstadt.
Â
Lycoming put a runner on third in the fifth, but that was as close as either team could get to scoring the rest of the game.
Â
Brown went 2-for-2, Kunes went 2-for-3 with a run and Schoenstadt went 2-for-3 with a run, RBI and double for the Warriors. Thompson went 2-for-3 with a run to lead Alfred.
Â
Shannon Schaefer (5-5) took the loss for the Saxons, allowing three runs, six hits and a walk in three innings. She struck out three.
Â
In the second game, Lycoming was held to three hits, while a three-run third inning rally by Alfred was enough to post a 4-1 win.
Â
The Saxons scored a single run in the first, as Thompson singled, stole second and scored on a pair of groundouts. In the third, they added three runs thanks to five hits to get a 4-0 lead.
Â
The Warriors got the run back in the bottom of the third, as Kline singled to center to lead off before taking second on an error. She took third on a groundout and scored on another grounder before Kunes singled into center field.
Â
Lycoming only got one more runner into scoring position, though, and Alfred reliever Jessica Wilcox struck out the side in the seventh to earn the save.
Â
Sophomore
Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) (4-2) took the loss for Lycoming, allowing four runs and six hits in 2 1/3 innings before sophomore
Cayla Treaster (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) allowed two hits in 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
Â
Jillian Murray (2-2) earned the win for Alfred, allowing three hits and a run in five innings. Wilcox tossed two innings, allowing a walk, to get her first career save.
Â
Kline led the Warriors, going 2-for-3 with a run, as she moved her games-reached-base streak to 28. Thompson went 2-for-3 with two runs for Alfred and Haley Powers also added two hits.
Â
The Warriors get back in action on Thursday, April 20, when they head to Messiah for a key MAC Commonwealth doubleheader, with first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
