Warriors keep the cup in rivalry twinbill split with River Hawks

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) delivered an RBI single in the third inning of the first game to set the Lycoming College softball program record for hits in a season and to help lift Lycoming to a 2-0 win to retain the Cancer Awareness Cup against rival Susquehanna University at Sassafras Field on a beautiful Friday, April 14. Susquehanna was able to rally for a 2-1, eight-inning win in the second game.
Kline's single was her 43rd hit of the season, breaking the school record of 42 set by Jeanine Evans (1999) and Jess Nabholz (2010), and it also extended her hitting streak to 25 games, tied for the 24th-longest in Division III history. The streak was final snapped in the second game, as Kline finished 0-for-3, although she did reach base with a leadoff walk.

In the first game, junior Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) (9-4) tossed one of the finest games of her season, allowing four hits and three walks in a complete-game shutout. She struck out two and never let a runner past second base in the 2-0 win.

Shady was helped by some great defense, even helping the team turn a heads up double play in the third inning, when Shady dropped a lightly hit blooper between first and the circle. She flipped to first and junior Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) delivered a strike across the diamond to third base to cut down an advancing runner.

The Warrior offense got started in the third inning, as junior Rachel Duda (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) started the inning with a single to left, moved to second on a sac bunt by Fischer and scored on the record breaking single by Kline.

Lycoming (17-9 overall) added an insurance run in the ninth, as sophomore Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) drew a two-out walk with a tough at bat before Kline blooped a single into left field. Freshman Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) followed with a double down the left field line.

Kline finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and Brown also went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a double for the Warriors, who wrapped six hits in the game.

Jamie Fesinstine took the loss for the River Hawks (17-9 overall), as she allowed six hits, two runs and three walks in the complete game. She struck out six.

In the second game, Nace (4-1) tossed another gem for the Warriors, allowing just four hits and no earned runs in a complete game effort, but Susquehanna eked two runs across in the bottom of the eighth, using the international tiebreaker to earn the win.

Alexa Gonzalez was just as effective for Susquehanna, allowing just four hits and two walks to earn the win. She struck out four and didn't allow a hit until Duda singled with one out in the sixth.

Lycoming put two runners on with two outs in the seventh, thanks to hits from Shady and junior Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley), but a strikeout ended the threat.

In the eighth, Nace was placed on second due to the international tiebreaker. She moved to third on a sac bunt by Fischer and scored on a double to left center by Duda. The River Hawks escaped further damage, though, with a strikeout and a popout.

In the bottom of the inning, Susquehanna sacrificed Heather Pearson to third before she scored on a double off the fence by Jackie Gore. After a fly out, the winning run scored on an error.

Duda led the Warriors offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double and RBI. Emilie Boman led Susquehanna, going 2-for-3.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday, April 18, when they host Alfred University at 3 p.m. in another non-conference doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
