Warriors fall to Lions

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) scored five goals and sophomore Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) posted three to lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team, but an 11-goal first half helped Albright post a 15-9 win in MAC Commonwealth action at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Wednesday, March 29.
 
The Warriors (3-4 overall, 0-1 MAC Commonwealth) were paced by Lazarich, who scored on five free-position shots, to go with four ground balls and two draw controls. McGinniss added three scores on free-position goals while adding two ground balls and nine draw controls, as she moved into third in school history with 174 career draw controls, moving past Megan Wallenhorst, who had 172 from 2005-08.
 
The Lions (5-4 overall, 1-0 MAC Commonwealth) scored the first goal of the game before the Warriors dented the scoreboard with the first of Lazarich's goal with 24:17 left in the first half. However, the Lions scored 10 of the next 11 goals to take an 11-2 lead with 17 seconds left in the half. Lazarich scored with six seconds left, getting in position to get fouled and deliver a free-position goal, making it 11-3 at the break.
 
In the second half, the Warriors scored four of the first six goals, closing within five goals at 13-8 with 18:54 left, but Albright scored the next two goals to halt the comeback. Still, the Warriors outscored Albright, 6-4, in the period, holding a 15-11 advantage in shots.
 
Senior Leanne Shaw (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) scored a goal and added two draw controls and freshman Kayla DiJoseph (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) added an assist.
 
Sophie Bass led the Lions with five goals, two assists, three draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers. Devon Mela added four scores and Kelly Baumann added two goals and an assist. Mariah Cullen posted a goal and four draw controls.
 
Senior Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) (3-4) finished with seven saves, four groundballs and two caused turnovers. Hayley Joyce (5-4) stopped 13 shots in the win for the Lions.
 
The Warriors get back in action on Saturday, April 1, when they face Hood College in MAC Commonwealth action at 1 p.m.
