Warriors hold off Monarchs, 12-9

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Sophomore Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) had five goals and junior Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) added four goals and an assist to lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team to a 12-9 non-conference win over King's College on Saturday, March 25, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
 
In the first half, the Warriors jumped in front, thanks to the efforts of McGinniss and Lazarich, who combined to score eight goals. McGinniss led the way with all five of her scores, including the first two of the game, and Lazarich added three goals and an assist.
 
The Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead that expanded to 6-1 with 13:46 left. King's added a pair of goals in the second part of the half, but the Warriors scored three, with the last coming unassisted by freshman Kayla DiJoseph (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) with 1:12 left to give Lycoming a 9-3 lead heading into the break.
 
In the second half, the two teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes, with sophomore Thamina Peti (York, Pa./West York) putting a shot into the back of the net. King's started a comeback from there, scoring five straight goals, with a score from Anastasia Araviakis with 5:26 making it 10-9. The Warriros responded, though, as Lazarich won a draw control and drew a foul in the arc. She immediately took advantage of the free-position shot and junior Caroline Mitchell (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) added another insurance goal with 1:22 left to round out the scoring.
  McGinniss added three draw controls, two ground balls and a caused turnover and Lazarich posted five draws, two ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior Victoria Siebecker (Annville, Pa./Annville-Cleona) posted three ground balls, a draw and a caused turnover.
 
Araviakis led the Monarchs with three goals, an assist and two caused turnovers and Gabriella Morrocu added three goals and five draw controls.  Amanda Carroll also posted two goals and three draws.
 
Senior goalkeeper Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) (3-3) posted 10 saves in her 30th career win, becoming the second keeper in program history to reach the mark. She also added a team-high four ground balls in the game. Victoria Zawacki (2-4) stopped six shots in the loss for the Monarchs.
 
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, March 29, when they host Albright College at 4 p.m. in the MAC Commonwealth opener for both teams at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
