NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Scoring two runs off a hit, a passed ball, a hit batter and three errors, the Lycoming College softball team made the most of its opportunity on Friday, March 17, facing off against two-time First Team All-Centennial Conference selection Aileen Reilly, and junior
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) was up to the task on the mound, as she tossed a complete-game six hitter to post a 2-1 win over Gettysburg to wrap up the team's Spring Break trip at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.
Â
The Warriors (7-2 overall) scored both their runs off Reilly, who had thrown a perfect game on March 16 against SUNY Canton, in the top of the third inning. Freshman
Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) struck out with one out, but reached first on a passed ball. After a popout, she reached second when freshman
Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) reached on an error. Senior
Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch.
Â
Shady drove in Brown with a single back to the circle and the winning run scored when senior
Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg) hit a grounder to short and was able to reach after another miscue.
Â
The two runs were all that Shady needed after allowing a first inning run. She allowed seven runners in the final six innings, but was able to escape each situation. In the fourth , she was able to get out of a bases loaded jam by forcing a comebacker, that she flipped over to junior
Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) for the out at first base.
Â
In the sixth, with runners on second and third, she reared back to get a strikeout to end the inning. In the seventh, Kunes snagged a one-out liner at third base to take a way a sure double and Kline ranged over from short into foul territory to catch the final out to snap the Bullets seven-game win streak.
Â
The Warriors had three hits in the game, with Kline going 1-for-3 with a run scored and Shady going 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the team. Kunes also had a hit.
Â
Liz Cowell led the Bullets (8-3 overall), going 2-for-3, while Taylor Doi scored the lone run in the first inning.
Â
Shady (4-2) allowed six hits, two walks and one run in the complete game. She struck out three. Reilly (3-3) allowed three hits in her complete game effort, allowing no earned runs. She struck out nine and walked one.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, March 22, when they will attempt its home opener by facing Elmira in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
