Warriors rally past Gettysburg, 2-1

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Scoring two runs off a hit, a passed ball, a hit batter and three errors, the Lycoming College softball team made the most of its opportunity on Friday, March 17, facing off against two-time First Team All-Centennial Conference selection Aileen Reilly, and junior Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) was up to the task on the mound, as she tossed a complete-game six hitter to post a 2-1 win over Gettysburg to wrap up the team's Spring Break trip at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.

The Warriors (7-2 overall) scored both their runs off Reilly, who had thrown a perfect game on March 16 against SUNY Canton, in the top of the third inning. Freshman Madison Brown (McElhattan, Pa./Central Mountain) struck out with one out, but reached first on a passed ball. After a popout, she reached second when freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg) reached on an error. Senior Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) loaded the bases when she was hit by a pitch.

Shady drove in Brown with a single back to the circle and the winning run scored when senior Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg) hit a grounder to short and was able to reach after another miscue.

The two runs were all that Shady needed after allowing a first inning run. She allowed seven runners in the final six innings, but was able to escape each situation. In the fourth , she was able to get out of a bases loaded jam by forcing a comebacker, that she flipped over to junior Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) for the out at first base.

In the sixth, with runners on second and third, she reared back to get a strikeout to end the inning. In the seventh, Kunes snagged a one-out liner at third base to take a way a sure double and Kline ranged over from short into foul territory to catch the final out to snap the Bullets seven-game win streak.

The Warriors had three hits in the game, with Kline going 1-for-3 with a run scored and Shady going 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the team. Kunes also had a hit.

Liz Cowell led the Bullets (8-3 overall), going 2-for-3, while Taylor Doi scored the lone run in the first inning.

Shady (4-2) allowed six hits, two walks and one run in the complete game. She struck out three. Reilly (3-3) allowed three hits in her complete game effort, allowing no earned runs. She struck out nine and walked one.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, March 22, when they will attempt its home opener by facing Elmira in a 3 p.m. doubleheader at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
