Warriors fall victim to Albright rally

READING, Pa. – Freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) posted her second straight double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the fifth-seeded Lycoming College women's basketball team, but a solid-shooting effort from top-seeded Albright College in the second half helped it to a 67-53 win in the MAC Commonwealth Championship semifinal at the Bollman Center on Wednesday night, Feb. 22.
 
The Warriors finish the season with a 15-11 mark, the second time in three years the team reached 15 wins, while Albright (22-4 overall) advances to the MAC Commonwealth Championship for the second straight year, where they will face Messiah on Saturday, Feb. 25.
 
Lycoming started out the game strong, jumping out to a 9-3 lead over the first six minutes of the first quarter, as Kline led the run with five points. Albright fought back to within two points, but the Warriors held a 14-11 lead going into the second, where they scored the first five points, with Kline hitting another 3-pointer to make it 18-11 with 8:53 left.
 
The Lions, who shot 19 percent in the first half, came back with a 12-2 run to take the lead, but Kline's third 3-pointer with 1:50 left in the half tied it at 25 and senior Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) hit a layup with 14 seconds left to give Lycoming the lead before a Nina Mazzarelli 3-pointer with four seconds left gave Albright a 28-27 lead going into the break.
 
The Warriors took the lead back once more in the second half, with a layup by junior Shelby Mueller (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) with 8:47 left and Lycoming tied the game twice more in the quarter, the second time off a 3-pointer from sophomore Becca Painter (Elverson, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) to make it 36-36 with 5:32 left. However, the Lions finished the quarter on a 12-4 run.
 
In the fourth quarter, the Warriors cut the lead to seven points twice, but the Lions answered each time, with an 11-3 run that made it 63-48 with 2:13 left helping to seal the win.
 
Freshman Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and five steals and Mueller added nine points and seven rebounds. Calella posted eight points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the final game of her career.
 
Calella, a four-year starter at point guard, helped the Warriors to 57 wins in her career and finished her career 19th in school history with 758 points, third with 371 assists and eighth with 162 steals. Her .763 free throw percentage is eighth in the school record book.
 
Mazzarelli led the Lions with 20 points and Devan Horka posted 10 points and 16 rebounds. Alysha Lofton added 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists. Albright shot 48 percent (14-of-29) in the second half to post the win, while Lycoming finished the game shooting 28 percent (18-of-64) from the field.
