Johnson lifts Warriors to school-record with win vs. Mustangs, 97-81

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With a career-high 31 points, senior David Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa./Communications Tech) led a high-flying Lycoming College men's basketball team that shot 53 percent from the floor to a 97-81 win over Stevenson University in the MAC Commonwealth regular-season finale, helping the team tie its school record with its 21st win of the season on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Lamade Gym.
The Warriors improved to 21-4 overall and the team finished with a three-game hold on first place in the regular season standings over second-place finishers Widener and Albright. The win ties the school record of 21 wins, set three times before (1995-96, 2003-04, 2009-10), although this is the first time the Warriors have won 21 games in the regular season.

Lycoming gets back on the court in the MAC Commonwealth Championship semifinals in Lamade Gym on Wednesday, Feb. 22, when they will face the winner of the first round game between fifth-seeded Lebanon Valley and fourth-seeded Alvernia on Monday, Feb. 20. Admission to all MAC Commonwealth Championship games is set for $6 for adults, $4 for seniors, $2 for students and children under six-years-old are free. Tickets will be available at the door the night of the game.

Johnson led a Lycoming offense that drained 11 3-pointers with a career-high six, as he finished with 31 points, five rebounds and three assists. He was one of just three Warriors in double figures, but the team hit 40-of-76 from the floor to cruise to its fifth straight win. Junior Chris Wallace (Randallstown, Md./Calvert Hall) posted 19 points, nine rebounds and two steals and junior Alex Newbold (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) added 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

The Warriors began the game on fire, opening up a 24-6 lead in the first 6:20 after a jumper by freshman Trent Bishop (Hyattsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt) dribbled in off the side iron. Stevenson (4-21 overall, 2-14 MAC Commonwealth) was able to cut the lead down to single figures by the halfway mark of the half and a late run of nine straight points helped the Mustangs come within two points at 41-39 with 2:06 left. The Warriors never let the Mustangs get any closer, though, and a jumper by sophomore Calvin Chandler (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista) made it 48-44 at the break.

In the second half, Lycoming scored the first five points of the period and got the lead into double figures, where it stayed after back-to-back trifectas from Johnson made it 65-51 with 14:51 left. From there, the Warriors were able to make the lead grow to as much as 24 points with 4:56 left off the final triple of the game from Johnson, as it easily held on for win while scoring more than 90 points for the third time in four games and the fifth time this year.

Junior Darius James (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) added eight points and three rebounds for the Warriors and both senior Willie Kee (Baltimore, Md./Parkville) and sophomore T.J. Duckett (Severna Park, Md./Calvert Hall) each added six points. Kee notched seven assists and senior Nyk King (Harlem, N.Y./Manhattan Center for Science & Math) had five.

Michael Byrd had 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists to lead the Mustangs and Cameron Hayes added 19 points. Ben Wiebusch also added 13 points and two assists and Cliff Cornish posted eight points and 10 rebounds.
