Warriors split pair at Pa./N.Y. Duals

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Heading into the third period down by a point, freshman 197-pounder Travis Ogden (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) turned his opponent from SUNY Oswego, helping to turn the match in favor of the Lycoming College wrestling team as it split a pair of matches at the Pa./N.Y. Duals at Clark Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7, beating Oswego, 23-14, after falling to RIT, 26-16, in the early match.

Down 4-3 to Daniel Smith, listed higher on the list of honorable mentions by d3wrestle.com than Ogden, Ogden got an escape quickly to draw within a point before he earned a four-point near fall as the clock ticked under a minute left to ensure a 7-4 lead and break a tie at 14 to give Lycoming (11-2 overall) a 17-14 lead.

Senior Skylar Ebner (Muncy, Pa./Muncy Area) clinched the win, scoring an early takedown before putting Kade Andrews on his back in 56 seconds at heavyweight to give Lycoming the win.

The Lakers (2-4 overall) took a 10-0 lead through the first three bouts before senior Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) posted a 7-2 win over Joey Bush at 149 pounds, giving Lansberry his 126th career win, just one shy of the school record of 127 set by Royce Eyer (1997-01).

Freshman Hadyn Swartwood (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) followed with a 13-0 major decision win over Michael DeCapua at 157 pounds and senior Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) tied the match at 10 with a  2-0 win over d3wrestle.com contender Troy Seymour at 165 pounds, giving him 123 win in his career.

Junior Brandon Conrad (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg Area) gave Lycoming's its first lead of the day with a  14-0 win over Michael Southwick at 174 pounds, but sixth-ranked Jordan Bushey responded with a major decision of his own for the Lakers at 184 pounds to set up the dramatic finish.

Against RIT (4-1 overall), the Warriors won three matches, all of the major point variety, to stay into the match until the heavyweight bout, when the Tigers secured the 26-16 win with a pin.

Senior Seth Lansberry (Klingerstown, Pa./Line Mountain) posted an 11-2 major decision win over Colby Hall at 149 pounds and both senior Nolan Barger (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) and freshman Travis Ogden (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) each posted first-period pins in their bouts at 174 and 197 pounds, respectively.

The Warriors get back on the mat on Friday, Jan. 13, when they start the two-day Budd Whitehill National Duals with three dual meets. The 16-team tournament will begin at 9 a.m. in Lamade Gym.
