Warriors comeback for 56-52 win over Blazers

FREDERICK, Md. – A comeback from down five points in the fourth quarter helped the Lycoming College women's basketball team earn its second straight win with a 56-52 MAC Commonwealth win at Hood College on Saturday afternoon, Jan. 21, at BB&T Arena.
 
Junior Shelby Mueller (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) led the Warriors (11-6 overall, 5-4 MAC Commonwealth) with 19 points, 11 rebounds, two blocks and three steals, posting her seventh double-double of the season. Freshman Kayla Kline (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) added 11 points and seven rebounds and senior Nicole Calella (Sandyston, N.J./Kittatinny Regional) added eight points and four steals.
 
Down 44-39 as the clock ticked under nine minutes remaining, the Warriors closed the gap to one before a 3-pointer from Taylor McGaughey gave Hood (6-12 overall, 1-8 MAC Commonwealth) a 47-43 lead with 6:42 left.
 
The Warriors responded though, tying the game at 65 off a layup that started an old-fashioned 3-point play with 6:05 left. After a Hood turnover, freshman Akilah McFadden (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) hit a layup to make it 50-47. The Warriors continued to hold the lead and increasing it to five points at 54-49 after a Kline block led to a fastbreak bucket by sophomore Jenn Grove (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg Area) with 3:37 left.
 
The Blazers cut the lead to two with 2:51 left, but neither team could post another field goal and Lycoming closed out the game with two free throws in the final 10 seconds.
 
The Warriors jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the first four minutes of the first quarter, spurred by four points from Kline. The Warriors kept a lead of five after a bucket by junior Haley Sipple (Boothwyn, Pa./Chichester) as the clock neared the two-minute mark, but the Blazers fought back into the game, taking a 20-18 lead early in the second quarter.
 
The Warriors struggled through a four-minute scoreless stretch, but used six points in the final two minutes of the quarter to take a 28-24 lead into the break.
 
In the third quarter, Hood used a 7-2 run to open the quarter to take the lead and the team took a four-point lead late in the quarter before a free throw from Mueller made it 41-38 heading into the final quarter.
 
McFadden finished with five points, three rebounds and two assists and Grove added six points, as Lycoming finished 22-of-68 from the floor (32.4 percent).
 
Hood was led by 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists from Dajah Gee and 13 points and four assists from Allie Appleby. McGaughey finished with 11 points and four rebounds, as Hood finished 19-of-56 from the floor (34 percent), but Lycoming held a 47-40 advantage in rebounds and 36-16 advantage in points in the paint to outlast the Blazers.
 
The Warriors get back on the court on Wednesday, Jan. 25, when they host Messiah in a 6 p.m. MAC Commonwealth clash at Lamade Gym.
