HAVERFORD, Pa. – Down two goals heading into the last 10 minutes of a game against the sixth-ranked team in the country, the 10
th-ranked Lycoming College men's soccer team scored twice to post an impressive 2-2 double overtime tie against Haverford College on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 11, at Walton Field.
Â
After Haverford (2-1-1 overall) put together goals midway through the first half and early in the second half, the Warriors (1-2-2 overall) were forced to pressure and they did so with aplomb, firing twice as many shots as the Fords in the second period.
Â
Finally, in the 82
nd minute, junior
Kyle Thomas (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) found the head of sophomore
Sainclair Tueno (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair), who put it in the net in the midst of a scrum in the box. Continuing to pressure, the Warriors earned a corner and were able to keep the ball in the attacking end and finally, junior
Abdullahi Abdi (Seattle, Wash./James Garfield) lifted a cross that met the head of junior
Jordan Logan (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area), who finished off the play.
Â
The goal was the 20
th of Logan's career, as he became the 15
th player in program history to reach that mark.
Â
Both teams pressured in overtime, but neither could get the equalizer, and the game went final after a Haverford corner kick was followed by a header that flew high above the net.
Â
The Warriors held an 18-14 advantage in shots taken and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. In net, sophomore
Chris Solecki (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) finished with five saves to earn his second draw of the weekend. Haverford's Sam Miller stopped a shot in regulation's 90 minutes before Jeremy Asetesano stopped one shot in the two overtime periods.
Â
The tie is the team's first against a nationally-ranked opponent since a 0-0 draw at Messiah in the semifinals of the 2013 MAC Commonwealth semifinals, a game Lycoming went on to win in penalty kicks. The team's last regular season tie against a ranked team came against No. 24 Elizabethtown in 2009, 0-0.
Â
The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they head to Juniata for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
