Warriors comeback to draw #6 Fords

HAVERFORD, Pa. – Down two goals heading into the last 10 minutes of a game against the sixth-ranked team in the country, the 10th-ranked Lycoming College men's soccer team scored twice to post an impressive 2-2 double overtime tie against Haverford College on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 11, at Walton Field.

After Haverford (2-1-1 overall) put together goals midway through the first half and early in the second half, the Warriors (1-2-2 overall) were forced to pressure and they did so with aplomb, firing twice as many shots as the Fords in the second period.

Finally, in the 82nd minute, junior Kyle Thomas (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) found the head of sophomore Sainclair Tueno (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair), who put it in the net in the midst of a scrum in the box. Continuing to pressure, the Warriors earned a corner and were able to keep the ball in the attacking end and finally, junior Abdullahi Abdi (Seattle, Wash./James Garfield) lifted a cross that met the head of junior Jordan Logan (Oxford, Pa./Oxford Area), who finished off the play.

The goal was the 20th of Logan's career, as he became the 15th player in program history to reach that mark.

Both teams pressured in overtime, but neither could get the equalizer, and the game went final after a Haverford corner kick was followed by a header that flew high above the net.

The Warriors held an 18-14 advantage in shots taken and a 7-6 edge in corner kicks. In net, sophomore Chris Solecki (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) finished with five saves to earn his second draw of the weekend. Haverford's Sam Miller stopped a shot in regulation's 90 minutes before Jeremy Asetesano stopped one shot in the two overtime periods.

The tie is the team's first against a nationally-ranked opponent since a 0-0 draw at Messiah in the semifinals of the 2013 MAC Commonwealth semifinals, a game Lycoming went on to win in penalty kicks. The team's last regular season tie against a ranked team came against No. 24 Elizabethtown in 2009, 0-0.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, Sept. 14, when they head to Juniata for a 7 p.m. non-conference match.
