SCRANTON, Pa. – Sophomore
Cheyenne Altland (East Berlin, Pa./Delone Catholic) led a Lycoming College volleyball team that posted seven blocks with four, but the University of Scranton used a solid hitting effort to post a 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-15) non-conference win in the season opener at the Long Center on Thursday night, Sept. 1.

Altland finished with three kills and four blocks, while senior
Tayler Whitman (New Cumberland, Pa./Cedar Cliff) finished with five kills and three blocks to lead the Warriors (0-1 overall). Freshman
Alyssa McDevitt (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and senior
Kristine Jahn (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) each posted four kills.

Sophomore
Emily Hepner (Leesport, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) led the team with 11 digs and freshman
Emily Morris (Lake Ronkonoma, N.Y./Sachem North) led the team with 14 assists.

Kristin Kirwan led the Royals (1-0 overall) with 15 kills, as Scranton hit .204 while Lycoming hit .095. Catherine Manning hit .583 with eight kills and Morgan Rentzheimer added 10 digs and four aces. Victoria Capogna led the team with four blocks and Brittany Cafiero added 29 assists and three aces.

After Scranton took the first set by a score of 25-11, the Warriors came out strong in the second set, taking a 5-0 lead thanks to a pair of blocks from Altland and Whitman. The Warriors kept the lead, posting a 20-14 lead after a kill from Whitman. However, the Royals closed the set on an 11-3 run to post a 25-23 win. In the final set, Scranton used an opening 14-6 run en route to the 25-15 win.

The Warriors get back on the court on Saturday, Sept. 3, when they head to Wilkes University for matches against Clarks Summit (10 a.m.), Wilkes (12 p.m.) and Penn College (2 p.m.).
