WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Junior
Kelcie Crabb (Millmont, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) and sophomore
Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) each recorded two hits to lead the Lycoming College softball team, but the team fell victim to 18
th-ranked Messiah, falling 2-1 and 11-2 in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader on Wednesday, Apr. 6, at Shangraw Athletic Complex.
The Warriors fell to 11-12 overall with a 1-7 record in the MAC Commonwealth while the 18
th-ranked Falcons improved to 21-2 overall and 6-0 in conference.
Courtney Allen (11-0) got the win for the Falcons in the first game, as she pitched a complete game, giving up one run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
After the game remained scoreless through four innings, the Falcons struck first in the top of the fifth when Sydney Boreman launched a two-run homer to left field to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
In the seventh, the Warriors began a rally when senior
Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) led off the inning with a double to right-center. After freshman
Cayla Treaster (Williamsport, Pa./Montoursville Area) pinch-ran for Weaver, senior
Dominque Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) sacrificed Treaster to third with a bunt. Two batters later, Crabb, who recorded the first Warrior hit of the game in the fifth, singled up the middle to score Treaster. During the next at-bat, Crabb tried to advance to second on a wild pitch but was thrown out by catcher Becky Notte to end the game.
Sophomore
Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) (6-4) pitched well for the Warriors, as she pitched a complete game and gave up two runs on seven hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
In the second game, Madelyn Yannetti (3-1) came on in relief in the fourth inning and finished the game with 3.1 innings while allowing no runs on just one hit with one walk and two strikeouts.
Messiah got on the board in the first with an RBI-double from Notte to score Brooke Pompeo. The Warriors answered back in the bottom of the first when Schoenstadt led off with a triple followed by an RBI-single up the middle from senior
Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy). The Warriors took their first lead in the second inning when Thomas scored on an RBI-single from sophomore
Samantha Fischer (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) after reaching on a hit-by-pitch.
Messiah went on to score the final 10 runs of the game, including two runs on one hit and an error in the fourth, three runs on four hits and two errors in the fifth, and five runs on six hits with one error in the seventh.
Weaver (4-7) took the loss for the Warriors in the second game, as she pitched a complete game and gave up 14 hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
The Falcons were led by Pompeo, who finished the day batting 5-for-8 with a double, a triple, one RBI and three runs scored. Notte also contributed four hits and a run scored while Fix and Boreman each drove in two runs.
The Warriors will get back on the field on Saturday, Apr. 9, when they host Albright at 1 p.m. in another tough MAC Commonwealth doubleheader at Shangraw Athletic Complex. ?
