Warriors swept by Albright

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. - Sophomore Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) led the Lycoming College softball team with two complete games, giving up just two earned runs in the pair, but the team fell victim to a dominating pitching performance from Albright College, falling 3-1 and 3-0, in MAC Commonwealth action on Tuesday, April 12, at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.

The Warriors' record drops to 11-14 overall and 1-9 in the MAC Commonwealth while the Lions improved to 17-8 overall and 3-3 in conference.

Sammi O'Connor (10-7) got the win in the first game, as she threw seven innings, giving up one run on three hits with two walks and 11 strikeouts.

The two pitchers were locked in a classic pitchers' duel as the game remained scoreless through five and a half innings. Finally, in the bottom of the sixth, the Warriors broke through as sophomore Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) singled to center and was brought in to score two batters later on an RBI single to left from Shady.

In the top of the seventh, two Warrior errors kept the inning alive long enough for the Lions to scratch three runs across while O'Connor closed the door on the Warriors in the bottom of the seventh.

Shady (6-5) finished the first game by allowing up three unearned runs and seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

In the second game, O'Connor (11-7) was called on once again and threw a four-hit shutout, striking out 10. O'Connor totaled 14 innings, seven hits, one run, three walks and 21 strikeouts on the day.

Deadlocked in another pitchers' duel, the game remained scoreless through four innings. In the top of the fifth, the Lions scored twice on two hits and were able to add an insurance run in the sixth on two hits and an error.

Shady (6-6) finished with her 12th complete game while giving up three runs (two earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Shady finished the day with a total of 14 innings, 12 hits, six runs (two earned), four walks and nine strikeouts.

Schoenstadt notched two hits in the first game and scored while Shady recorded a hit in both games and drove in a run. Freshman Alexis Kovin (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) contributed a pinch-hit single in the second game while senior Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) and freshman Liz Nace (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) also recorded hits.

The Lions were led offensively by Regina Milburn, who finished the day with three hits. Stephanie Pomante notched one hit and two RBI and Corinne Garuffe notched two hits, a double and scored a run in the second game.

The Warriors return to the field on Wednesday, April 13, when they host crosstown foe Penn College in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
