Warriors clinch playoff berth with 22-9 win over Alvernia

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Senior Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) recorded a game-high nine points for the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team, as she was one of four seniors to record a point in a 22-9 Senior Day win over MAC Commonwealth foe Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon, April 30, at Shangraw Athletic Complex.

The win improves the Warriors' record to 12-4 overall with a 4-4 MAC Commonwealth record to help the team finish the regular season in fifth place. The win secures the Warriors' first trip to the postseason since 2010 as they will travel to fourth-seed Albright on Monday, May 2, at 4 p.m., for the opening round of the MAC Commonwealth Championship.

Jackson scored six goals and recorded three assists to give her 79 goals and 33 assists on the season, as her 79 goals are just one shy of the school record of 80 set by Grace Gargiulo in 2011. Sophomore Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) finished with four goals and four assists, as she is third in school history with 89 points (59 goals and 30 assists), with her 59 goals tied for eighth in program history.

Freshman Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) also scored six goals for the Warriors with an assist and senior Savannah Fox (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) recorded a hat trick, including her 100th career goal. Seniors Kelsey Harshman (Hamilton Square, N.J./Steinert) and Emily Mullenholz (Olney, Md./Sherwood) also scored, with Mullenholz's being her first of the season.

After falling behind 1-0, the Warriors reeled off four straight goals in 1:49, including two from Jackson. After Alvernia scored for the second time, the Warriors, again, scored four straight in 2:14 to take an 8-2 lead. Both teams scored two more goals as the Warriors went into halftime leading 13-5.

In the second half, the Warriors scored seven of the first eight goals to take control of the game, 20-6. After the Crusaders scored, McGinniss and Harshman scored their final goals of the game, followed by two more goals from the Crusaders to yield the final margin.

Senior Erica Spero (Chantilly, Va./Chantilly) led the Warriors with four ground balls and two caused turnovers, while junior Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) picked up three ground balls. McGinniss, who holds the school record with 109 draw controls, and Lazarich, who is third with 80, both won nine draw controls.

As a team, the Warriors outshot the Crusaders, 35-27, and held a 23-10 advantage in draw controls. The Warriors were 13-of-14 on clear attempts and 4-for-9 on free position opportunities. The 22 goals scored tied a season-high for the Warriors and it was also the fifth time this season that the team scored 20 or more goals in a game.
