Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Jackson ties record as Lycoming’s season ends at Albright

READING, Pa. – Senior Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck/Anne Arundel C.C.) closed out her career by tying the single-season record for goals and freshman Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) led the fifth-seeded Lycoming College women's lacrosse team with seven goals, but a second-half comeback helped fourth-seeded Albright College edge out Lycoming, 16-15, in the MAC Commonwealth Championship first round game at Shirk Stadium on Monday, May 2.

Jackson scored her 80th and record-tying goal with 13:24 left in the first half, as she tied the mark of 80 goals set by Grace Gargiulo in 2010. McGinniss scored seven times to finish her freshman campaign 66 goals, which is tied for sixth-most in school history, and she added seven draw controls to her school record, finishing the year with 115.

Junior Leanne Shaw (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) scored four times and added two assists and sophomore Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) added two goals, an assist and two draw controls.

The Warriors finish the season 12-5 overall, as they notched the most wins for the program since 2008 and reached the MAC Championship for the first time since 2010. Albright improved to 11-6 overall and move on to face Messiah in the MAC Commonwealth Championship semifinals on Wednesday, May 4, at 4 p.m.

Down by two goals, Shaw won a contested draw and drove in for a score with 2:21 left to close within a goal and Lazarich won the ensuing draw, but Albright forced a turnover and was able to run out the clock for the win.

McGinniss scored a diving goal with 10:07 left to tie the game at 13 before Lazarich gave Lycoming the lead with 8:38 left in a man-up situation. However, in the next six minutes, Albright scored three straight goals.

Lycoming opened the game with five goals in first 17 minutes, with McGinniss scoring two goals during the run, including the first of the game. Jackson scored her record-tying goal with the fifth and final goal of the run before Albright got on the board with a goal from Sophie Bass.

After Albright closed within three goals, McGinniss added a pair more scores in a span of 80 seconds to make it 7-2. The Lions got a transition goal in response, but Lycoming responded with its own transition, as Shaw scored after picking up the ball in a scrum in front of the net. She added another score with 2:03 left with a pretty wraparound goal.

Albright scored one more before the break to make it 9-5 at the break, as Lycoming held a 16-15 advantage in shots at the break, but an outstanding nine-save performance from junior goalkeeper Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) to keep the four-goal lead.

Lycoming got the lead up to six goals early in the second half thanks to goals from Lazarich and McGinniss. However, Albright fought back to take the lead with 11:41 left thanks to an 8-1 run, with Jacqui Montague to take the lead.

Sophie Bass led Albright with four goals and an assist and Erin Farrell added three goals and two assists. Montague posted three goals and an assist. Farrell, Sydney Nankervis and Mariah Cullen each posted two caused turnovers and Farrell led the team with three ground balls.

Gerling finished with four ground balls and three caused turnovers to go with 13 saves. Emily Hutson made three saves in net in the first half for the Lions before Hayley Joyce (3-1) saved five shots in the second half to earn the win.
