WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – Freshman Kelly McGinniss (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored a career-high seven goals to lead the Lycoming College women's lacrosse team, but the team fell victim to a strong second-half performance by Albright College, falling 17-12, at Shirk Stadium in MAC Commonwealth action on Saturday, April 23.
Sophomore Jordan Lazarich (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) scored twice for the Warriors and freshman Thamina Peti (York, Pa./West York Area) and seniors Meghenn Jackson (Arnold, Md./Broadneck) and Savannah Fox (Port Deposit, Md./Perryville) each scored once to round out the Warriors' scoring.
The Warriors (11-4 overall, 3-4 MAC Commonwealth) opened the game by scoring the first four goals in 5:58, including two from McGinniss. The Lions responded by scoring six of the next seven goals to take a 6-5 lead. After Jackson and Lazarich scored to give the Warriors a one-goal lead, the Lions scored two of the final three goals in the half to head into the break tied at eight.
The Lions (10-5 overall, 5-2 MAC Commonwealth) scored seven of the first eight goals in the second half to take a 15-9 lead. The Warriors cut into the gap, managing three of the next five goals with McGinniss scoring her seventh goal with 1:53 remaining to yield the final margin.
Junior Nicole Gerling (Millstone Township, N.J./Allentown) led the Warriors with five ground balls while Lazarich, McGinniss, Fox and freshman Kim Rutherford (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville Area) each grabbed two. Lazarich led the defense with two caused turnovers and led the team with six draw control wins. McGinniss was second on the team, finishing with four draw controls while Jackson won three.
The Lions were led by Mariah Cullen, who recorded four goals and two assists. Erin Farrell scored a team-high five goals and Amanda Smith recorded a hat trick and an assist. Nicole Klusewitz, Sophie Bass, Sydney Nankervis, Danielle Carey and Smith all picked up two ground balls while Nankervis led the defense with two caused turnovers. Cullen won six draw controls and Smith won five.
Gerling (11-3) took the loss for the Warriors, as she made six saves. Hayley Joyce (2-0) played the final 24:42 to earn the win for Albright, as she made six saves.
The Warriors return to the field on Saturday, April 30, when they host MAC Commonwealth foe Alvernia in a game that could determine one of the five MAC Commonwealth Championship slots at 1 p.m. at Shangraw Athletic Complex.?
