WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – All five seniors recorded a hit for the Lycoming College softball team and all five either scored or drove in a run as the team got solid performances across the board in a doubleheader sweep of MAC Commonwealth foe Hood College on a sun-filled Saturday, April 23, at Shangraw Athletic Complex winning 3-2 in the first game and 5-2 in the second game.
The Warriors improved to 19-18 overall and 3-11 in the MAC Commonwealth and have now won seven of their last eight games. With one more win in the doubleheader at Widener on Sunday, the Warriors could secure their first winning season since 2005 and the team's first 20-win season since 2003. The Blazers dropped to 17-15 overall and 7-7 in conference.
Senior Elisa Novak (Ambler, Pa./Germantown Academy) recorded two hits in the second game including a solo home run to left-center while Ashley Burger (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) also went deep with a solo home run in game two. Senior Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) finished with two hits and a RBI and senior Chelsey Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) had a hit and a RBI. Senior Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) got a win for the Warriors and notched a hit in the second game.
Junior Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) finished the day 5-for-6 with a solo home run in both games and three RBI, moving her season batting average to .424, which is the seventh highest in program history. If she stays above .400 in the last doubleheader, she would be the first Warrior to hit .400 since Missy McCoy hit .407 in 2007. Her five home runs, meanwhile, are one shy of the school's single-season record of six held by Amy Cline (2013).
Sophomore Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) (9-9) got the win in the first game for the Warriors, as she threw a complete game and gave up one earned run on five hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
The Warriors struck first in the second inning when Kunes led off the inning with her first home run of the day, a deep drive that seemed to still be ascending even after it left the field.
After the Blazers got two runs in the fourth inning on a hit and a Warrior error, the Warriors responded in the bottom half of the inning when sophomore Heather Secord (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) led off with a walk. After Kunes singled to right for her second hit, Thomas drove Secord in with a hard single through the right side to tie the game, 2-2. The Warriors were able to push the go-ahead run across the plate in the next inning when Secord singled through the right side to score Shady after Shady had reached on an infield single.
Beth Laque (3-4) took the loss for the Blazers, as she pitched six innings and gave up three runs on six hits with six walks and three strikeouts.
The Warriors performed well defensively in the first game, including a sliding catch in foul territory by Burger in the third and a running catch into a slide by sophomore Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) in center.
Weaver (9-8) got the win for the Warriors in the second game, as she pitched 4.1 innings and gave up one earned run on five hits with one strikeout. Shady picked up her first save, as she pitched 2.2 hitless innings in relief.
The Warriors got on the board in the first inning when Novak, Shady, Secord, and Kunes all recorded consecutive singles with one out to score Novak and take a 1-0 lead. After the Blazers got the run back in the second on an Ashley Fourcade home run, Novak responded by launching a solo home run to regain a one-run Warrior lead.
The Blazers tied the game again in the fourth, but in the bottom of the inning, Burger joined in on the home run action by hitting her second home run to give the Warriors a 3-2 lead. With one out in the sixth, Kunes launched her second "no-doubter" home run to left. Four batters later, with runners on first and second, Poorman singled to left center to score Weaver from second to yield the final margin.
Sophia Leaman (7-8) took the loss for the Blazers, as she pitched six innings and gave up five runs on 10 hits with one walk and six strikeouts.
The Warriors recorded 10 hits in the second game and slugged four home runs while limiting the Blazers to just 10 hits total.
The Blazers were led by Fourcade, who finished 3-for-6 with a solo home run and two runs scored. Shelby Alcorn finished the day with a hit and a RBI.
The Warriors conclude their season on Sunday, April 24, when they travel to Widener for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.?
