Warriors split with Misericordia

DALLAS, Pa. – Junior Morgan Kunes (Beech Creek, Pa./Central Mountain) went 4-for-6 with a double and a homer and senior Kristi Weaver (Milton, Pa./Milton Area) threw a three-hitter to lead the Lycoming College softball team to a non-conference split with Misericordia University, falling in the first game, 5-4, before posting a 5-1 win in the nightcap at Anderson Field on Thursday, April 21.

Weaver (8-8) won her fourth game in five outings by tossing a three-hitter to ensure the split with the Cougars (22-12 overall).

Kunes paced the team offensively in the second game, going 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and four RBI. Sophomore Heather Secord (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown Area) added two runs scored, a hit and a walk.

Lycoming (17-18 overall) got on the board in the first inning, as sophomore Rachael Shady (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) reached on a two-out error before Secord singled through the right side, setting up Kunes, who smashed her 11th double of the season into the left-center field gap for two runs. The 11 doubles is one shy of the school record of 12 set by Ashley Witmer in 2014.

In the fourth inning, Kunes reached on an error. After a fielder's choice, senior Dominique Thomas (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport Area) took second on a balk before scoring on another error. Lycoming added two more runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead when Secord led off with a walk before Kunes homered to left field.

Weaver, meanwhile, retired the first 15 batters that she faced before Cailey Ware and Alexa Doggett led off the sixth with singles. After a sac bunt and a pop out, the lone Cougar run scored on an error.

Bailiee Schies (11-6) took the loss for Misericordia, as she allowed four hits, three walks and two earned runs in the complete game. She struck out five.

In the first game, the Warriors fell victim to a late four-run rally by the Cougars in the last three innings of the game to take a 5-4 decision.

Sophomore Ashley Schoenstadt (Gap, Pa./Pequea Valley) went 2-for-4 with a run in the game, moving within three hits of the school's single-season record of 42 held Jess Nabholz (2010) and Jeanine Evans (1999), while the run helped her become the third player in school history to score 30 times in a season.

Kunes also went 2-for-3 with two RBI and Secord notched a hit, two runs and a RBI.

The Warriors jumped out with two runs in the first inning, as Schoenstadt singled up the middle beforea sac bunt moved her into scoring position. After Shady walked, Secord singled to bring in the first run of the game. Thomas followed with a walk, who set up Kunes, who delivered a RBI single that brought in Secord.

Misericordia got one of the runs backed in the bottom of the first, but Lycoming answered with one run in the fourth inning, as Kunes walked before Weaver reached on a fielder's choice. After a wild pitch moved Weaver up, senior Chelsey Poorman (Bellefonte, Pa./Bald Eagle Area) doubled to right-center to score a run.

Misericordia got a run back in the fourth thanks to a RBI double from Lori Brennan, but Lycoming again got a run in the fifth. Secord reached on an error before Thomas singled, setting up Kunes, who singled to right field with two outs to make it 4-2.
